I had done a little bit of practice before these (a day or two - not much done), but this is when I actually bought some of the needed supplies; a pencil, an eraser, tortillions (used to blend out the pencil, it is basically rolled up paper), a ruler, a kneaded eraser (it is like silly putty, it is used to "pull" pencil marks off the paper, creating highlights), and some drawing paper. I was supposed to use a circle stencil for the ball, but I didn't have that, so that was the best I could do by hand hehehe So I will call this picture day 1, I liked the mouth with teeth, it gave me hope to continue on :)

This was also done on day 1. The female nose came out pretty dang crooked hehehe, but I thought I did a good job on the male nose and mouth combo. I also liked the eyeball. But I really start to worry, if I have what it takes to put it all together.

The next day, I did my first ear. I had mixed feelings about it, but it was sure better than all the other ears I have done before hehehehe I went back and drew some of day one pics to see if I could do better. All this is done by graphing the pictures. The book had a grid over the pictures, and I would have to create a light grid on my paper, and try to draw just what is in each box, instead of looking at it as a whole picture. After I got the basic outline, I erased the graph, and followed step by step on where and how to shade the picture to make them look real.

Male nose and mouth was done on day 2, while the lady was drawn on the 3rd day. I was impressed by how the lady came out, maybe there is hope for me after all.

For some reason, one of my pages didn't scann right hehehe Oh well, it was just freehand doodling of noses, and I wasn't too impressed. I needed some report covers, so that I could create a graph on it to use in the book, that is why I tried to do a little without the help of making a grid. The noses were done a week after the other work. I was too lazy to get the report covers, so I skipped a week. Even after the noses, it was another 4 days before I did this male nose and mouth (again). I was anxious to get back to drawing, but still needed to make my see through graph so I could try to draw a full face hehehe

Can you guess who this is? It is supposed to be Marilyn Monroe, but it didn't come out very well. I had FINALLY made the grid on a report cover, and this was my first try. It really didn't look much like Marilyn to me, but I though the picture itself was pretty dang good, for me! hehehe

I drew this picture right after I drew Marilyn. I think y'all should be able to easily identify this fella :) Not a bad George Washington, if I do say so myself hehehehe

The next day (this was done on Oct. 25, 2001 so you can know the time frame hehehe) I drew Abe Lincoln. My drawings are far from perfect, but consider how long I have been doing this? THIS KICKS BUTT!!!!!! There truly is HOPE for me!

After scanning the pictures, they came out pretty big hehehehe I kept reducing the size in half. But since this was the picture that I did today (October 26, 2001), I figured I would show it in both sizes hehehehe This was my attempt at drawing a man with a harder expression to draw. If you look at my pictures as a whole, they are pretty AWESOME for a beginner, not that I am impressed with myself hehehehe But really if I can do this, then ANYBODY can!! But if you look at each detail of the picture, you can see I need a lot more practice. The eyes, the nose, the mouth, etc... All could use some fine tuning. But All in all, I am VERY happy with my progress.
I am now ready to practice on real photographs. I wonder if I could make people I know look like themselves hehehehe The book that I consider magic, because it can make even me look like I can draw, is Called "Discovering Drawing Series: Drawing Real People!," by Lee Hammond. This lady has actually gotten me to think I have potential hehehehe
