In 1736 Rudolph Essig, aged 70 and sons, Georg Abraham (40), and
Hans Michael (30) arived in Philadelphia,
from Wurtenburg, Germany, on the
"Princes Augusta"
on September16, 1736. They settled near the
old Augustus
Lutheran Church in Trappe, Pennsylvania (USA). The Church is still active
today and has a
homepage. During the
1780's the Essig spelling was changed to Essick though other spellings exist.
The original family name translates to the word vinegar. It would seem
that the original family members were vinegar merchants.
We are interested in receiving or exchanging family history information
with anyone who has traced
their family history to to include the names Essig and/or
Essick.
