M & T Enterprises is a Canadian Company specializing in Laminating Equipment and Supplies. Although we carry both cold and hot laminating equipment, we STRONGLY recommend the heat activated systems and supplies. The reasons behind our convictions are explained in full detail in the section COMPARISON BETWEEN COLD PRESSURE SENSITIVE AND HEAT ACTIVATED LAMINATION (HOT vs. COLD).

HOT vs. COLD

ABBREVIATIONS: PVC=poly vinyl chloride (cold roll 3M material) P.E.T.= polyester terephthalate (heat-activated lamina)

ARCHIVAL QUALITY: Pressure sensitive lamination encapsulates active chemical ingredients that attack the item laminated including printing, photos, identification documents, etc. and will ultimately eliminate the readability of most of these documents since it does not provide an archival protection. It is not only non-archival but the active ingredients are hermetically sealed to attack both the paper and the images or type on the paper and will bleach these out in many cases over time (aggravated by sunlight). Although it offers limp protection against abrasion it is a detriment to printed images, including computer output. Basically it encases and destroys original.

ABRASION RESISTANCE: PVC surface abrasion resistance is poor because the plastic materials are thin and limp. Their overall thickness for two layers is only .005 of an inch or between 1/2 and 1/8 of the thickness range of heat activated lamination. P.E.T. has 20 times the abrasion resistance of PVC against scuffing and scratches, etc.

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: This structure is limp and not suitable for items that require a stiff overlay. This semi-rigid integrity is not suitable for vertical hanging because it is stored on coils rather than flat, which encourages constant rolling or turning up of the finished product. There is only one gauge of material available rather than the four gauges that heat lamination offers. The sole thickness available is .0025 of an inch whereas heat lamina can range from this thickness to 8 times this gauge.

WASTE FREE DISPENSER: Our tests indicate a 15% - 25% waste factor with the 3M plastic hand crank dispenser vs. the heat-activated laminators, with little or no waste.

WASTE FREE VARIETY: PVC is available in 81/2" or 25" width and the sole thickness .0025: per side. Hot Mylar lamina is waste free in that you can buy the correct size needed and is available in four thicknesses; precut into over 100 sizes which equates to over 400 off-the-shelf options vs. 1.

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: When exposed to heat or sunlight, the pressure sensitive material softens and can ooze at the edges and shift to eliminate congruency of the top edge from the bottom leaving a tacky edge that can pick up dirt and dust. Basically the top sheet can shift from the bottom piece because the adhesive is never permanently sealed together.

VERTICAL FILING: The PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) material, using pressure sensitive adhesive, has a very soft and limp surface characteristic in contrast to the Mylar (Polyester Terephthalate) which is structurally sound, even when filled vertically.

FLAME RESISTANCE: PVC is highly flammable and can result in smoldering fires long after the flames have been supposedly extinguished. P.E.T. is self-extinguishing and will not leave a continuing undetected fire hazard.

PUNCHABLE: Holes can be punched in P.E.T. material whereas PVC cold laminate shifts and oozes. Again, because the PVC is never permanently sealed together as is the P.E.T.

ROUNDED CORNERS: All heat-activated lamina, in sizes up to 6"x9", have rounded corners to prevent finger cuts and hang-ups when removed from vertical files, etc. PVC lamination produces square corners.

CONVENIENCE: PVC equipment is 18th century type hand-cranked wasteful dispenser with a crude razor-edge cutter vs. the fully powered heat laminator, which uses lamina in various sizes.

OTHER INFO:
Hot laminating is less expensive than that of cold lamination for two reasons. The first being that cold laminate costs approximately $1.00 per page whereas hot laminate costs $0.34 per page to laminate an 8 x 11 letter size sheet. The second being that cold laminate comes in a roll form whereas hot laminate is supplied in various sizes to suit any need be it from business card size to menu size henceforth eliminating the waste factor that occurs with cold roll lamination.

WHY CHOOSE LAMINATING - DESCRIPTIVE PHOTOS

These are just a few examples out of many that show reasons why laminating is a wise investment. The photos you see here were taken at various garden centers, supermarkets, hardware stores and other locations.

As you can see from the photo above, the packaging containing the price page has allowed water to collect inside it and as a result it leaves the price sign hard to read, dirty, and un-professional.

The above photo is yet another example of how using a page protector does not live up to it's name and is used for a job it is not meant for.

This price sign above has become bent, soggy and unable to read or view from a short distance.

EASY AS 1-2-3

As the photo above indicates, it is easy as 1 ~ 2 ~ 3 to protect any and all important papers(not just price signs) and all it takes is a few moments per page. The first step is too place the page you wish to laminate in a laminating pouch then place the pouch in a protector (as the picture demonstrates above) then feed it through the laminator.

Laminated materials are attractive to customers by a more professional appearance.

They are more visible, brighter, cleaner and reusable.

Pages laminated and placed outside are water resistant and protected against fading.

LAMINATING AS A RETAIL SERVICE

While the business use of laminating is well established, the retail side is still relatively unexplored.

Owning and using a laminator as a retail service is a very wise investment. Many businesses have a laminator for their own in store use, however, placing the laminator in a customer service area and advertising the service will bring your company added revenue.

Laminating Business Cards, Hunting Licenses, Membership Cards, Photos, Menus, Certificates, and Diplomas are just a few examples of the retail services your company can offer.

Along with the uses listed above, many other items can be laminated such as maps, placemats, scrapbooks, important reports, and many otherwise degradable papers.
