Nonreligious Beliefs
These are my beliefs which can apply to anyone and have no grounds in my religious beliefs. They are simply my feelings on the world and how it should work.
I believe in respect. Respect for everyone and everything, because first, it is polite, and second, because it goes a long way in being the best you can be. Everyone should start out with respect. From the Pope and Mother Teresa to the prostitutes on the streets. But they must earn the keeping of that respect. If you want it, you must earn it, and giving it back goes a long way in that.
I believe in not killing living things unless you are going to eat it or it is miserably in pain. This includes both insects and spiders as well. And smashing it to put it in pain so you can smash it again and kill it is just spiteful.
I believe in love at any age. How old you are has zero relevance in your ability to feel love and know when you've found The One. Some find them at thirteen, some at sixty. When doesn't matter.
I believe in letting people be who they are, even if you don't like it. It's their life, not yours, so why worry about it?
I believe in making you own opportunities. They won't always come knocking at your door, so you have to get out there and make something happen. Santa doesn't drop off opportunities in the off season!
I believe in the power of choice. Everything that happens to you comes down to your choices. Yes, sometimes thigs do happen that are out of your control, but it is what you do with them that controls the outcome.
I believe in gay and lesbian rights. No one has legally prevented straight people of legal age from marrying, so why prevent anyone? How is one woman marrying another harming you? How would you, as a straight person, react if I told you you cannot legally marry the person you love?
I believe in teaching by example. Hypocracy is not the first lesson you want to teach a person. If you splatter your cubicle with posters or quotes about loving and treating others as you want to be treated, I'd better not see you flipping the bird on your way home.
I believe in considering maturity level, not age, in deciding your child's privilages. There are some incredibly mature seven-year-olds out there, and some equally immature sixteen-year-olds.
I believe in having an open mind. When you encounter a new idea, think about it, really consider all its aspects before just dismissing it as stupid or evil or accepting it as the best thing since sliced bread.
I believe in taking a stand. Don't just accept people pushing you down. If you believe something, stand by it. Be proud of what you believe and stand strong.
I believe in abortion rights. It is not the fact that the fetus deserves a life, it is what kind of life it will live. A crack-addicted child born to a mother that cannot care for it should be aborted. A child that has Tay-Sachs should be aborted. A rape baby that will do nothing but remind the mother of the attack should be aborted. The child of a fourteen-year-old girl with a good home that wants the child should live. Some women physically cannot handle the birth of a child. If it endangers their health, then it is her choice. I believe in the punishment fitting the crime. If your child failed to clean their room because they were in front of the TV all afternoon, take away the TV. Don't ground them from the phone if what they did had nothing to do with the phone. Now, if their chores were neglected in favor of the phone, then take away the phone.
Follow the Butterfly!
For my Beloved Amy.
