On Woodland and VDR ...

The bug had already bitten me and it was itching real bad. I had scored a fairly complete 125 Elsinore but it was still in need of a few things. While surfing for vintage MX stuff one thing lead to another and I got this hair-brained idea to search for my old lost buddy …
Randy Skiver. Lo and behold, I got some hits; a reference to his National win at Castle Rock, photos at something called VDR and jeez an email address. So I fired off one of those “out of the blue” emails …”Gotta be Big ole Randy on an S-90 right ????”… I was pretty sure it was so I waited for a reply. What came back blew my socks off.

He replied, “I was thinking of you Sunday when I was on the starting line at
Ward Creek in the Pre 70's class. I was on a 125 Honda engined Penton that I just built and lined up next to a 100 Hodaka and it reminded me of the old days.”

He told me about the “
Woodland” series and how fun it was and that I should try to make a few. Well it took me another 3 - 4 mths as I was coaching my son’s football team and had to wait for the season to end … damn if we didn’t play our games on Saturday! The January race came way to fast and I wasn’t ready but made the commitment to be there in February, hell or high water (I’d seen the pics!). On that early February morning, as I turned off the freeway and headed up the frosty river road I hoped I’d brought warm enough stuff to wear. The nippy AM turned into a gorgeous day. I found myself surrounded by friends, both old and new, and I was hooked.

So thanks Randy and thanks to all of you that together make this the “TIME OF OUR LIVES”
I think this is the day I first started to become Mutt-ly. It's one of those things that we don't notice at first. But after you pack up and start to drive away ... it hits you.

There once was a table top at H&T,
where at break the
water truck took a great pee.
Moto 1, second round, was sent off,
in the mud each rider went sputter, cough,
Causing spectators to holler with glee!
Woodland

G-N-G, w/ the help from others, did a fantastic job putting on their 1st ever event ... 275+ riders battled not only each other but near triple digit temperatures, and the damnest mudhole ever ...
