Chapter 6

Harley rode around in the taxi cab for about fifteen minutes.  The more she thought about the situation, the more angry she became.  She felt betrayed by her best friend.  She picked up her cell phone and called Mika.

"Hello?"

"I’m on my way back to the arena.  Bring Joey out front.  We’re going back to the hotel."

Mika stepped away from the others so that they could not hear her conversation.

"Harley, don’t do this.  Don’t run away again."

"I’m NOT running away, I’m going home!"

"That’s still running away."

"I thought you were my friend.  How could you do this to me?  To Joey?"

"I’m not doing this TO Joey, I’m doing it FOR Joey.  He needs to at least know his father.  Don’t you think he deserves that?"

"I don’t even know his father.  We were doing just fine until you pulled this shit!"

Harley noticed the driver looking at her in the rear view mirror, "This wasn’t your decision to make."

"I didn’t mean to hurt you, Harley.  I thought it was the right thing to do."

"Well that’s what you get for thinking!  Have Joey out front in five minutes!"

The tears began to stream down Harley’s cheeks again as she pushed the end button on her cell phone and told the driver to take her back to the arena.

As she arrived back at the arena, she saw Joey standing out front with Mika - Jana right beside her.  Harley let out a big sigh and wiped the tears from her face.

"You ready to go?", Mika asked giving Harley a signal to let her know that Joey didn’t know what was going on.

"Yeah.", Harley answered as she paid the driver and climbed out of the taxi.

"Where’d you go, Mom?"

Harley thought quickly, "I didn’t want to spoil your fun, so I just went for a little ride that’s all."

"You look like you’ve been crying."

Harley forced herself to laugh, "That’s because I hit my knee when I got into the taxi and it really hurt."

"You gonna be okay?", he asked with concern for his mother.

"I’ll be fine.", she told him, "Let’s go."

Harley looked at Jana as they walked off towards the rental car.  "Don’t.", Jana mouthed.  But Harley ignored her friend’s plea and turned away.  Joey talked non stop on the way back to the hotel which was a good thing since Harley wasn’t talking to Mika.  He was so excited about meeting his hero.  How on earth could she ever tell him that his hero was actually his father?  He would be thrilled, but would he ever forgive her for lying to him all those years?  She didn’t want to think about it anymore.

They reached the hotel and Joey was so worn out from all of the excitement that he put on his pajamas and fell fast asleep.  Harley stepped out onto the balcony and lit a cigarette, taking in deep the first drag.  Mika joined her.  Without even looking at her, Harley growled, "Go back inside.  I don’t want to talk to you right now."  Mika thought that she had done enough for one night so she left her alone.
