Chapter 13

Harley arrived at the hotel room to find Mika and Joey sitting in the floor playing a video game.  She set her purse down on the table and had a seat on the bed behind them, "Having fun?"

"Yep.", Joey said not taking his eyes off of the screen as he attempted to beat Mika at whatever game they were playing.

Harley took a deep breath.  She knew what she was about to do, what she was about to say, would change her son’s life forever.

"Joey, honey, I need to talk to you.", she said trying to stay calm as her hands began to shake.

"Can it wait just a minute?  I’ve almost got her beat.", Joey pleaded.

"No, I really need to talk to you now.", Harley insisted.

Mika reached over and turned off the game.

"What’d ya do that for?", Joey asked angrily.

But before she could answer, Joey saw the serious look on his mother’s face and knew that "it", whatever "it" was, must be important.

"I’m going for a walk so the two of you can talk.", Mika said excusing herself from the room.

"What is it, Mom?  What’s wrong?", Joey asked as he sat down on the hotel bed next to his mother.

"Well…..it may not be something wrong per say.  That’s up to you.", Harley began.

Joey looked confused as he listened to his mother.

"Do you remember what I told you about your father?"

Still confused he said, "Yeah.  You said you only met him once and then you never saw him again."  How grown up he seemed to her.

"That WAS true.  At least until yesterday."

"Mom, what are you talking about?", Joey asked almost afraid of what he was about to hear.

"I saw him again, yesterday."

Joey’s eyes grew big, "What?  Where?"

"At the arena."

"Is that why you left in that cab?"   She nodded.  "Why didn’t you tell me?  Why didn’t you let me meet him?", he asked as tears brimmed his eyes.

"You did.", she simply stated.

"What?"

Tears began to fall down Harley’s cheeks as she broke the news to her son, "Jeff.   Jeff Hardy is your father."

Joey just stared at his mother in shock for a minute before saying, "Why didn’t you tell me? All this time I watched him on television and not once did you tell me.  Why?"

"I didn’t even know his last name, Joey.  I didn’t know that’s who you were watching.  I didn’t even know he was a wrestler until I saw him last night."

Joey sat there not saying a word.

"Please don’t hate me, Joey.", she began to sob.

"I don’t hate you, Mom.  If you say you didn’t know, then I believe you.", he said hugging her, "Does he know?"

"He does now."

  "And?  What did he say?"

She forced a smile, "He said he wants to be your Dad.  What do you think about that?"

"I think that’s great, Mom.", he answered, "Can I go see him?"

"Are you ready for that?"

"I’ve waited seven years already.  I don’t wanna wait anymore."

They both smiled and hugged each other tightly.

"I love you, Joey."

"I love you, too, Mom."

She picked up her phone and dialed Jeff’s number.  As she did, she watched her son full of a new found happiness.  It was hard for her to believe that he was only seven years old, he was so mature.
