| Chapter 14 Before we left, a FBI agent came to my house to talk to me about Daniel’s escape. He gave me a phone number to call if anything happened. Jeff informed him that we were going out of town and gave him his cell phone number to call us and let us know if they caught him. One of Jeff and Matt’s co-workers said that we could stay at his house in Florida. So we packed a few things and headed out. It was a beautiful house on the beach. I tried to relax and enjoy it, but I was having a hard time. I was constantly looking over my shoulder expecting to see him there. Matt, Michelle and even Gilbert tried to take my mind off of it. Two days later, Jeff got a phone call from the FBI saying that Daniel had been caught and was back behind bars where he belonged. Extremely relieved, we packed our stuff and headed back home to Cameron. Matt and Michelle went to their house, Gilbert to his, and Jeff and I went to mine. I was flabbergasted as I opened the front door. The house was a wreck. Everything was turned upside down, dumped out or broken to pieces. My heart sank. "He was here.", I said fighting back the tears that were beginning to fill my eyes. The phone rang and Jeff answered it. It was Matt. Jeff was telling him what had happened when a thought hit me, "Jeff! What was the agent’s name that called you and said that Daniel was caught?!" He told his brother to hold on and he thought for a second, "Agent Clark." My eyes grew wide, "Agent John Clark?" "Yeah, I think so. Why?", he asked puzzled. "We have to get out of here!!", I yelled as I grabbed Jeff causing him to drop the phone. "Jade! What’s wrong?", he demanded. "John Clark was the name Daniel used when he was selling drugs. We have to go! He’s here!", I yelled in a sheer panic. Jeff’s back was turned to the kitchen. That’s when I saw him. "Look out!!", I yelled as I lunged at Jeff knocking him to the ground. I found myself standing in front of my ex-husband. He was glaring at me - his eyes burning with hate. It was a look of pure evil. I was so scared that I couldn’t move. "I told you that I would get you.", he hissed. I saw the gun he held in his right hand, but didn’t notice the knife that was in his left hand until I felt a sharp pain in my gut. I looked down to see blood pouring out around the blade that was now lodged in my abdomen. I fell to the ground and as I did, Jeff jumped on him. It was happening again. The very same thing that happened years ago, was replaying right there in my house. As I laid on the floor surrounded by an ever growing puddle of my own blood, I watched in horror as they struggled. My vision was tunneling in. Just before everything went black, I heard the gun go off. The bright light stung my eyes as I forced them open. I found myself lying in a hospital bed once again. And once again, I questioned the nurse as to where my boyfriend was. It was like I was reliving those years before as she hurried out of the room not answering my question. I just knew in my heart that he was gone and started sobbing. I laid there for a minute, alone. I closed my eyes and wished that I were dead. I couldn’t go through this again. Then I heard it. That southern drawl that melted my soul, "Jade?" My eyes flew open and I saw Jeff standing there. He sat down beside me and kissed me, "Baby, I’m so glad you’re okay. I was worried." I pulled him into a tight hug, "Me? I thought he shot you. I’m just glad you are okay." I looked over his shoulder and saw Matt and Michelle standing there, "all of you." A real FBI agent came into the room and we gave him our statement. It was finally truly over. Someone once said, "We spend our lives searching for happiness, but it is only when we find the peace within ourselves that our quest is complete." I honestly believe that is true. We all struggle through life’s trials and tribulations. Some of us have bigger demons to fight than others, but we all have to fight. I guess I was one of the lucky ones who actually completed my quest. I finally found the peace within myself. I’m coming!!! Just give me two minutes!!! Sorry, Jeff is waiting for me. We actually talked Matt and Michelle into going sky diving with us. I hope that my story has some how helped you through another day and given you at least a little hope.
