Chapter 2

Later that morning

I had managed to unload half of the truck by myself and probably could have managed the rest by myself with the aide of a two wheeler.  But on thing stopped me - the couch.  I have to admit that I’m a pretty strong person, but how can one person handle a couch that is longer than they are?  Where there’s a will, there’s a way.  I was able to push it to the end of the truck and down the ramp to the ground.  The only way to make it from there was to walk it the rest of the way.  So, I picked up one end and carried it forward as far as I could.  Then I did the same with the other end.  I repeated this until I reached the house.  Now what?  I couldn’t walk it into the house.  I’d never get it onto the porch without tearing it up.  If I pulled it up the steps it would tear for sure.  So I stood on the porch staring at the couch trying to figure out what to do.  I noticed the silver mustang from earlier pull up at the house across the road.  Michelle got out and waved.  She was followed out by two men.  One, I assumed, was her husband.  I should have asked them to help, but I was too stubborn to admit defeat.  I was going to get that couch in the house by myself if it killed me.  I turned my attention back to the task at hand.  I decided that if it tore, well it just tore, at least it would be in the house.  So, I pushed and pulled.  I wasn’t making any progress.  "Need some help?", I heard a male voice call from behind me.  I turned to see Michelle and the two men standing behind me.  "I almost had it.", I said with a smile.  The two men picked up the couch and carried it inside without a word.  "This is my husband, Matt.", Michelle introduced us.  "Nice to meet you , Jade.", he said as we shook hands.  He was a tall good looking young man with dark eyes and long curly black hair that was pulled into to pony tail.  "And this is my brother-in-law, Jeff.", she said introducing me to the other man who seemed to be a little younger.  Now, Jeff did not look like someone who would live in the middle of no where.  He had long hair that was dyed several different colors.  Both of his ears were pierced and he had a big tattoo on his forearm.  Our eyes met and he simply smiled.  "You unloaded all this by yourself?", Matt asked snatching my attention away from the gorgeous green eyes of his brother.  "Yeah.", I replied.  "You should have said something.  We would have been happy to help you.", Matt stated.  "It’s no big deal.  Really.", I answered, "Thanks a lot for bringing in the couch.  I would have been out there all night."  "No problem.", Matt replied.  Jeff looked at his watch and without saying a word he walked out he front door, tapping his brother on the shoulder along the way.  Matt followed.  He seemed a little strange, that Jeff, but his he was very easy on the eyes.  The next thing I knew,  Matt and Jeff were carrying in my furniture.  "Guys, you really don’t have to do that.", I said motioning for them to stop.  "We have a few minutes before we have to leave.  we can help you get some of it at least.", Matt insisted as he set a chair down.  Jeff just smiled at me as he headed back out to the truck.  I couldn’t believe how nice they were.  Back home, that would never have happened.  "He’s just a big suck up.", Michelle said causing us both to laugh.  Thirty minutes later, the truck was completely unloaded.  With all four of us working, we accomplished what would have taken me house to do by myself.  "I can’t thank you guys enough.", I said pulling a wad of money out of my purse.  I tried to give them both a hundred dollars, but they refused.  "You’re in the country now, Jade.  We do things for each other cause we’re neighbors, not to get paid.", Michelle said with a wink.  I almost felt ashamed that I had offered it to them.  Matt looked at his watch, "We’d better get going."  Jeff and Michelle nodded and they headed out the door.  "If you ever need any help, just holler at us.", Matt said, "If we’re not home, our Dad is just across the road.  And Chelle’s usually home."  I thanked them again as they made their way across the road.  I’m really going to like it here", I thought to myself as I sat down on my couch.
