chapter 4

When we got back to my house, Michelle helped me unpack some more and then she went home.  She offered to follow me to Raleigh the next day to take the U-haul truck back.  When she left, I flopped down on the couch.  Yet again, I was completely exhausted.  I showered, cleaned up the floor again, then hit the bed.

The faces rushed by as I reached out to grab them.  Screams echoed through my head.  Then I heard that voice.  The voice that haunted my dreams, "I’ll get you for this.  You’ll pay.  You can’t run from me.  No matter where you go, I’ll find you.  And when I do, you’re dead!"  I awoke with a start and sat straight up.  I was covered in sweat.  "Not again.", I said to myself.  The nightmares again.  I tried to go back to sleep, but I couldn’t.  I heard every little noise outside and every little creak of the house.  There would be no more sleep for me.  I looked at the clock and it was only midnight.  Having no curtains on the windows and living in the middle of nowhere, I was a bit scared.  I went into the bathroom and opened the medicine cabinet.  I grabbed the bottle and poured two pills into my hand, then placed the bottle back on the shelf.  I went to the refrigerator and grabbed a beer.  I threw the pills into my mouth and downed the beer then made my way back to the bed.  I grabbed my gun from under my mattress and curled myself up in the bed, waiting for the pills to kick in.

"Jade!  Jade!  There you are.", I heard a very distorted voice call.  Thinking that he had found me, I sat up and pointed the gun at the blurry figure.  "Oh Shit!", the voice said becoming a little clearer as did the image.  Forcing my eyes to focus, I saw a very scared Michelle with her body pressed to the wall hands in the air.  "Sorry.", I slurred as I stuffed the gun under the mattress.  Shaking, she lowered her hands.  I had scared her tremendously.  "What,", she started as she tried to regain her composure, "What the hell is wrong with you, Jade?"  "Nothing.  Sorry.  I thought you were trying to kill me.", I mumbled as I sat up and rubbed my eyes.  "Why on earth would I do that?", she said sitting down on the bed.  "I don’t know.  What are you doing here?", I asked.  "You told me to be here at 9.  I knocked and knocked and you didn’t answer.  It was open so I let myself in.  I was kinda worried.", she explained looking at me like she didn’t know what to think.  "Sorry.", I said again, "I couldn’t sleep so I took some pills and I guess I took one too many.  Just give me a few minutes and I’ll be ready."  I grabbed a pair of shorts and a T-shirt and went into the bathroom.  I splashed water on my face and tried to revive myself.  The hair just wasn’t going to work, so once again, my head was covered by a baseball cap.  Teeth brushed and a little more awake, I found Michelle standing on the front porch waiting for me.  "You okay now?", I asked.  "Yeah.  You just scared me to death.", she said.  I busted out laughing.  "What?!", she asked not very amused.  "You’re face.  It was priceless country girl.", I giggled. She tried to be mad, but couldn’t as she busted up laughing, "My face?  What about yours?"  She imitated me trying to aim with eyes that were barely open.
It WAS pretty funny.  I’m just glad that I didn’t pull the trigger.  We headed out to Raleigh.  The truck was dropped off and we went shopping.  I spent entirely too much money.  I bought everything from a shower curtain to new sheets for my bed.  Her poor little car was loaded down and we were on the way back home.  We spent the rest of the afternoon and evening unpacking, drinking and talking.  By the end of the night, everything was unpacked and we were half drunk.  I felt like I had known her all of my life.  She had told me just about everything there was to know about herself.  When she pushed for me to tell her about me, I changed the subject.  "So, that brother-in-law of yours…he’s good looking.", I said with a drunken smile.  "And taken, don’t forget.", she slurred, "Taken by a bitch, but taken nonetheless."  I smiled, "For now."  She smiled devilishly, "Jade, what are you up to?"  "Nothing.  Nothing at all.  I just meant that I’m sure he’ll get tired of her.", I said realizing what I had said.  "Uh-huh.  Sure.", she teased, "Jade?"  "Yes?", I asked.  "I’m drunk.", she announced.  I laughed, "Yes you are."  "Can I just stay here?", she asked unsure of her ability to make it home even though she just lived one house down.  "Sure.", I said but I noticed that it didn’t really matter what my answer was as she was passed out on the couch.  I chuckled at her as I covered her with a blanket and headed to bed myself.
