Chapter 8

I spent the next five days working in the yard and hanging out with Michelle.  She helped some, but it wasn’t something that she really like to do.  Most days, I worked half of the day in the yard and then we went shopping or just hung out.  By Thursday, I had finished all of the construction of my backyard paradise.  All that was left to do was add the plants.  I spent the morning and afternoon doing just that.  Six o’clock came along and I was finally finished.  I stood back and surveyed it.  It was just as I had imagined.  It really was beautiful.  And for the most part, I had done it myself.  Okay, well at least half of it, I did.  Jeff helped with the pond and then hired his friends to build the gazebo, but the rest of it I could lay claim to – the little bridge; the stone walk way that wound from the house, over the bridge and to the gazebo; not to mention all the many flower beds along the way.  I had worked hard, and I was proud of it.  I took a shower and got cleaned up.  Much to my own annoyance, I couldn’t wait for my meeting with Jeff on the roof.  There was just something about him that stirred a great attraction inside of me.  Maybe it was that he was so kind.  Maybe it was that he trusted me enough to bare his soul to me.  Or maybe it was just the obvious – he was gorgeous.  Those eyes alone could melt me with one stare.  I grabbed a six-pack of beer and headed out back.  Propping my new ladder against the side of my house, I smiled remembering finding it on the porch.  I climbed up and found that sturdy spot in which to sit.  I popped open a beer and waited for my partner in crime.  I waited and waited.  He didn’t show.  I waited some more. It was ten thirty and still no Jeff.  Disappointed, I climbed down from the roof and went inside.  I drank another beer and laid on the couch watching television.  My eyes grew heavy and I dozed off.  Around midnight, I woke up to some noise that was coming from the roof.  I walked out back and began to climb the ladder.  I stopped when I saw him as for a moment I lost the ability to breathe.  He didn’t look at me, only stared up at the sky.  "Hey.", I said quietly.  "Hey.", he said still looking up.  I sat down beside him. "Sorry I’m late.", he said.  "It’s okay. I just thought maybe you’d changed your mind.", I said.  He said nothing and still looked up.  I looked up to see what he was looking at, it was very cloudy and you couldn’t see any stars.  I looked back at him, still he hadn’t budged.  I knew something was bothering him, "Want to talk about it?"  It was then that he finally looked at me, "Naa.  I just want to get high….and hang out with you."  It almost looked as if he had been crying.  He didn’t press when I wouldn’t talk about my past, so I wasn’t about to press him to talk about whatever it was that was bothering him.  "I forgot the smoke.  You still got some?", he asked.  I smiled at him, "I’ll be right back."  I went back into the house and grabbed my trusty little bag and some beers from the frig.  When I returned, he seemed to look a little more cheerful.  I got the pipe ready and took the first hit, followed by a drink.  "I’ve figured you out Jeff Hardy.", I said passing him the pipe.  He looked at me kind of funny, "You have?"  "Yep.  You’re just using me for my dope…..and my roof.", I said starting to laugh.  He busted out laughing, "That’s it.  You DID figure me out."  I was glad he was smiling again - that gorgeous smile.  We were up there for a couple of hours, talking about non sense stuff and laughing like there was no tomorrow.  "I gotta pee.", he said laughing and causing me to - it wasn’t funny, but being stoned, everything was funny.  He climbed down the ladder and disappeared.  As I laid there on the roof staring at the sky, I dozed off.  Jeff returned and sat back down beside me.  He shook me gently, "Jade.  Wake up, Jade."  I opened my eyes and smiled at him, "I’m not asleep."  My eyelids gravitated together once again.  He brushed a strand out of my face, and leaned in close to me, "Jade.  Get up.  You can’t sleep on the roof."  "Sure I can.", I mumbled.  He laughed.  Just then it began to rain and it was cold rain.  "Damn.  Okay, I’m up.", I said sitting up and rushing for the ladder.  He followed laughing at me all the way.  We got into the house and I remembered, "Shit."  "What?", he asked.  "I have to go back up.  I left my bag of smoke up there.", I explained.  "I’ll get it.", he said heading back out to the ladder.  He was so sweet.  I was so tired that I sat down on the couch and laid my head on the armrest.  I quickly fell back asleep.  When I awoke, it was morning and he was gone.
