Hunger

by
JW Bradford

Fire without oxygen dies
As I did when I saw myself fade from your eyes

My hell is your heaven, as your freedom forbids mine
You beg  me to go, bu I am yours for all  time

To die watching you live
That is my curse

Like a man who is near water
Yet perishes from thirst

Not long ago
I held the beast at bay

But in my quest to touch you again
My control has slipped away

Now the demon laughs at my pain
My tears feed his hunger

He shows me hope and dreams of us
When love and we were younger

I turn to run and search for relief
In the arms of someone new

But every time I think I've won
He leads me back to you.

Between My Fingers

by JW Bradford
Source: Voices of the Heart (2004)

She entered my life, as special as gold
A woman of heart with passions untold
Her strength and beauty left me in awe
Yet ignorance was my greatest flaw

I saw her face, but not her heart
Until it was too late, we had grown apart
The pain and sorrow, still marks my soul
My friend and teacher, I love you so

I never stopped loving you, I wish you could see
You were the best thing I lost, and it always haunts me
How much a fool, to throw away such treasure?
For that's what you are, a loss too great to measure

Always your friend, but in secret your love
Till my body lies still, and my soul rests above.

"How do I speak about what "Voices of the Heart" means to me? How do I explain what the poetry does to my heart, my soul, my very being when I read it? How do you express to others how these verses, thoughts and words reach deep to the core of your being, when you know the feeling might not be the same to another?

I only know what I feel and "Voices" is one of the most beautiful works of poetry I have read in a very long time. I know it carries every emotion that can be expressed  because I have cried, sighed,  and marveled at feelings I know I've never known in my life time. Yet, I know each verse, each word, each thought has been felt and lived by the man that wrote the book.

"Voices of the heart" is a book of poetry that should be savored slowly, along with a glass of good wine and soft music and, if  you are anything like me,  you will find yourself picking it up again and again to read a poem or simply to know that love, with ALL its varous emotions, does still exist in the world."
