Jaro, Iloilo City

The Jaro Plaza is charming, to say the least. There's this really old Jaro tower on the
edge of the plaza, and across the street is the Jaro Cathedral. Also there, just about
50 paces away, is a small old church, the Jaro Evangelical Church. It is the first
Evangelical church ever established in the Philippines, I am told. And if you get into
churches seriously, there's more nearby. Just to name a few, the Molo church is just
ten minutes away, with its gender sensitive array of statues of saints. The beautiful
Miag-ao church is less than an hour out of town. Still another hoary old church, in
Zarraga in the opposite direction, was a pleasant surprise. Two Jaro festivals to
experience are the Dinagyang, usually held on the third or fourth Sunday of January,
and the fiesta of Jaro itself, which falls on February 2. Must eat: Lapaz batchoy,
pancit Molo, piyaya, and Biscocho House galletas.
