Song Fic

Disclaimer: Oh, if I only owned these characters, but I don’t.

This fic is a little different. It’s like I’m directing this scene on the set of GL. I heard this song on the radio in my car today, and my thoughts turned to Manny. And since we’ve had no romance this week, I thought I’d make up a little of my own!

Use Your Imagination On This One!! Pretend you are watching it on your television set!

The scene takes place at Towers. All the major Springfield characters are there – Josh, Reva, & Cassie, Beth & Jim, Blake, Ross, India, & Ben, Phillip & Harley, Drew & Jesse, and of course, Michelle, Rick, & Abby, and Danny, Carmen, & Dietz.

It is the night before Abby’s surgery, and Rick has taken her and Michelle out to dinner at Towers to celebrate, and wish her good luck.

The Santos clan is not there when they arrive.

The Bauers are seated and they order drinks. Obviously, Michelle is preoccupied, but puts on a smile for Abby’s sake.

She looks up after a few minutes and sees Carmen, Dietz, and Danny sitting down at a table across the room. She stares at him, unable to take her eyes of him.

Danny meets her stare. He is equally unable to stop looking at her.

The Bauers and the Santos clan have dinner, all the while Danny and Michelle are stealing glances at one another, while the rest of the people in the room talk about insignificant matters.

A song begins playing, and the rest of the noise in the room fades so that all we hear is the music.

The song is “When You Say Nothing At All”, written by Don Schlitz & Paul Overstreet. Recorded by Alison Kraus & Union Station, on their CD “Baby Now That I’ve Found You: A Collection”. Yes, it is a country song, not the typical style of music for Towers, but it’s just so appropriate for Manny! If you haven’t heard it before, find a copy and take a listen. See if you don’t agree that it’s great for the two of them. Here are the lyrics.

VERSE 1: “Its amazing how you can speak right to my heart. Without saying a word, you can light up the dark. Try as I may, I could never explain, what I hear when you don’t say a thing.”

CHORUS: “The smile on your face lets me know that you need me. There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me. The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall. You say it best when you say nothing at all”

(During the first verse and chorus, Michelle and Danny stare at each other from across the room. There eyes never leave one another. The camera pans back and forth between them as they ignore the mindless conversations going on at their respective tables.)

VERSE2: “All day long I can hear people talking out loud. But when you hold me near, you can drown out the crowd. Old Mr. Webster could never define, what’s being said between your heart and mine .”

(As the second first begins Danny stands up and starts walking toward Michelle. Carmen is peeved, naturally, but doesn’t want to make a scene. When Michelle sees him walking her way, she gets up and walks toward him. The meet in the middle of the dance floor. They don’t notice that no one else is dancing, when they wrap their arms around each other and begin to dance. Their eyes are locked in an intense gaze through the duration of the song)

The chorus repeats twice, and the music continues until it fades at the end of the song.

All the Springfield players watch them dance, their breath taken away by the depth of their love. Michelle and Danny don’t speak, they only dance, and look into they eyes of the other.

The thoughts of all the on-lookers are previously recorded, and we hear them as they watch Michelle and Danny:

Carmen looks on with disgust. Dietz is secretly pleased. He loves it when Danny ticks her off.

Rick doesn’t understand what the bond is between Michelle and Danny, but Abby does, and she watches them, hoping they’ll savor every second they have together. She knows that they fight for every moment.

Beth remembers when she and Phillip were the town’s favorite couple. She remembers how hard they fought to be together – Mindy, Lujak, Bradley etc. etc. She pouts and feels sorry for herself.

Cassie looks at them, and remembers how her dreams with Hart were cut short because of Dinah. She hopes that Carmen won’t cut Danny and Michelle’s dreams short.

Josh and Reva remember their star-crossed history. They both hope that these two love-lorn youngsters will be the next generation of true love in Springfield. But why does Reva keep have such strange feelings about Danny?

Harley’s hormones are going bezerk because of pregnancy, and she begins to cry.

Phillip is impressed by their obvious devotion to one another. He wishes that he could woo Danny out of the Santos business, and convince him to use his considerable business skills at Spalding Enterprises.

Blake and Ross each remember happier times together. India wishes Ross would look at her that way. Ben feels guilty (if you can believe that one) for helping Carmen drive a wedge between these two.

Drew makes a secret resolve to help Michelle and Danny find a way to be together. Afterall, she did her part to separate them, by her drunken romp with Danny. Jesse feels a little jealousy, because Michelle never looked at him with that much love or passion, but then he sees Drew, and realizes that he’s found his true love.

As the music ends, the camera fades back to Danny and Michelle. He leans down and kisses her, and they share a very tender kiss. Without a word, they go back to their tables, while the rest of Springfield sits there with their tongues hanging out.

When the dance is finished, all of Springfield is Danny & Michelle’s “Biggest Fan”. Carmen alone has a scowl on her face, and she realizes that everyone in the room thinks she is a monster.

Danny sits down at his table and says with a wicked smile, “Not a word, Mother. Not a word.”

Michelle sits down at her table. Rick’s jaw is on the floor. He is about to protest, when Abby stops him. She leans over and hugs Michelle.
