Divine Intervention & History? |
Filipinos believe that God can intervene in their behalf as history unfolds. This reminds me of the Jews and their last stand in Makada crediting to Jehovah God (Yahweh in Hebrew) any positive development on their side. Both professed Christians from the warring nations of Christendom in Europe during World War I invoked God to intervene in their behalf and secure their victory. Betrand Russel in his many essays and many like him deny the existence of God much less a God who intervene in human history. He is even an anti-war activist. But, considering that there are only 1% of such people in the world who declare themselves as atheists, coupled with recent change of heart of many scientists (atheists would find that assumption debatable) about the possibility of the existence of God, bear with for a moment and let us grant for discussion's sake that He does exist. For a lenghtier reading on that, you can visit this page. What does that imply between Him and human history? If God exists and He cares, surely He must want to communicate with his intelligent creation about his purpose for them. The answer is another controversial topic. He did through His revelations in the book that claimed to be His Word- the Bible. ****** For claiming to be God's Word, the Bible has been the most assaulted holy book. Every person, place, and statement in it have been scrutinized, criticized, rejected. Every writer of it has been discredited. Amazingly, the truth ultimately comes out and what used to be agressive human theories against the Bible turned out to be just that - theories that will later be junked by new discoveries. I don't intend to do a full discussion on that but here is one area worth following through regarding issues on the Gospels. ****** If God does exist and He cares and He communicated to us through the Bible, did he say what his purpose was? Yes. God purposes to replace all human governments with his own. He has expressed that purpose since the day man has abondoned God's sovereignty. The story of the Bible revolved on how He set about to accomplish that purpose. God intervened at certain periods in history to accomplish his purpose and mostly for that reason. At least that's what I found in my readings. When Jesus of Nazareth taught people about this replacement government, he told people to pray for its coming. "Thy kingdom come", Jesus told believers. Everything else that Jesus did reinforced the benefits of that Kingdom government to common folks. However, I did note that Jesus rejected people power of his time. He knew when the right time is and he opted to wait for his Father's time table. |
