Genesis p.8
“So far so good,” said Vaughn.  What’s next?”

Mansel considered that thought.  Before he could respond, Talaj cut him off.

“Long range sensors show a ship coming at us, portside!”

Mansel was flustered.  This was supposed to be a shakedown cruise, not an actual battle.  He was starting to feel sick.

“Orders, sir, we need orders,” said Lieutenant Commander Lamb.

Mansel’s mind went blank.  Fortunately, Vaughn recovered for him.

“Go to yellow alert and hail them.  Send them a friendship message on all channels.”  He looked over at Mansel, concern in his eyes.  “You alright?” he asked.

Mansel’s palms were sweaty.  Sweat was starting to accumulate on his forehead.  If he didn’t do something, and fast, then he was going to be out of a ship even before he got it good.

“They’re powering up weapons!” exclaimed Lamb.

“Battle stations!” said Mansel.  “Red alert!”

The soft white lights that had graced the bridge now turned to a harsh crimson red.  Mansel ended his shift behind his chair and finally ventured to sit down.  He gripped the armrests until he heard his knuckles popping.  His first test had finally come.  That’s when he knew the game had started.
