Excerpt from "First Encounter" USS Lucky Stars 19:13 SET 2191 Jim Brungess growled to himself as he moved through the engine room. He was supposed to be having fun with his wife, but no. These guys had to come and spoil it all. He guess they figured that if they couldn’t have any fun, neither could he. He tightened his grip on his carbine as he walked. No telling where these guys would come from. He heard a noise off to his right. Reacting, he swung his carbine in that direction but refrained from firing. It was the engine room, after all. After a second, he decided to move in the direction of the noise. Taking care not to bang himself on any low hanging pipes, he wove through the maze of refabricated steel and boilers. Whipping around one such boiler in a sudden motion, he brought his gun up and had the safety off before realizing that there was no one there. Taking a quick peep over his shoulder, he kept moving. He was determined to make someone pay for him missing out on some good quality fun. Sidestepping into a more open space, he scanned the railing above his head to make sure no one was perched, waiting to pick him off. He found, much to his dismay, no one there. He hoped Mansel was having an easier time finding these people than he was. He heard another sound to his right, and he ducked behind a boiler, ready to exchange fire. Poking his head out for a quick second, he saw nothing. He waited a second before moving again. Jim was determined to spoil their fun. Moving quicker now, he started to zero in on the source of the noise, letting his gun lead the way. Before he could get there, though, the tripped on a pipe that snaked along the ground. He hit the floor hard with a thud. His gun fell out of his hand. As he started to pick himself up, he felt the cold steel of what could only be a carbine at the base of his neck. |
