BLACKBELT THEATRE DOUBLE FEATURE: DRUNKEN TAI CHI & DYNAMO

Ground Zero Entertainment

Drunken Tai Chi/Dynamo

Man, did I set myself up for this one. When I got the disc, I decided to check the quality. I jumped to the opening of DRUNKEN TAI CHI and was amazed that the film looked stunning, letterboxed at 2.35:1! Surely Bruce Li's DYNAMO would get the same treatment, I thought. Sadly, that was not the case as is it a crappy full screen transfer.

Picture quality

Same old story here as the film appears to be mastered from a VHS tape. You get used to it, but the loss of picture is always apparent. The film doesn't really pan and scan, more along the lines of cut and paste.

Sound quality

To be honest, I don't know much about the sound quality. I mean, I heard the movie fine and that is all that really matters to me. Also, judging from the film's transfer, I didn't expect something to blow my speakers out.

The Film

Not bad at all, but not one of Li's best in my opinion. Li plays a cab driver who is plucked from obscurity by a film producer after Bruce Lee's death (smacks of irony, eh?). My main beef is his opponents in the fight scenes. Rarely do they seem to be up to his speed. Sort of like when Jackie Chan fought a bunch of big fat black guys in a bar in RUSH HOUR. The film also lacks that final smash everything showdown in an abandoned warehouse/building that I have grown to love from Bruce Li's films.
