Fists of Fury III

Picture quality

Once again, the DVD transfer is taken from a VHS source. And this time I have the proof! The print here is the exact same one as the Video Gems tape I have (which was released under the title of FIST OF FURY II, to make this more confusing). Comparison of the opening credits shows them to be identical, right down the flaws. The print is extremely worn with scratches increasing as each reel change grows closer.

Sound quality

The back of the case claims the film is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. This really irks me about these DVD companies. They haphazardly throw whatever the hell they feel like on there. Hell, the Ground Zero Shaw Brothers DVD collection says "Shaw Scope" on the cover of all of their FULL SCREEN transfers. Do they think we don't know anything? Sorry for the rant...the film is in Dolby 2.0 mono though.

The Film

This one is a big step down from the first sequel (CHINESE CONNECTION 2/FIST OF FURY 2). Bruce Li reprises the role of Chen Shen, this time returning to Macau after gaining his revenge. This film doesn't mention whether he was punished or not for his crimes in Shanghai. One cool thing is the audience gets to see more of the extension of Bruce Lee's original character's family, including his mother and younger goofy brother. Unfortunately, a lot doesn't happen in the first hour. The Japanese are in town again, this time opening a casino. They know about all the trouble Chen Shen created in Shanghai so they want him eliminated. The film REALLY picks up in the last 30 minutes. Finding out his mother and brother are dead (is this family unlucky or what), Chen basically travels in the pouring rain from house to house, wiping out any and all Japanese. These scenes are great, heavy on the atmosphere with lightening and thunder.

Extras

The only "extra" per se is the menu, which features nine chapter stops.

Packaging The cover (see picture above) has a nice big shot of Bruce's rival doing the kung fu pose down. The back features a still obviously cribbed from the cover of the Video Gems release.
