STORY OF THE DRAGON

Beverly Wilshire Filmworks/Telefilms International

Story of the Dragon

One day they will have a competition for the worst DVD ever. And I am sure plenty of Bruce Li titles will be there. However, if this one doesn't win, then I will eat my DVD! This is hands down the worst DVD I have ever seen and I will take on all challengers in a fight to the death on that one.

Picture quality

As expected this DVD is mastered from video. However, the fine folks at Beverly Wilshire went one step further and used a video that glitches and has a tracking problem! Yep, 1 min. and 45 seconds into the opening credits, the image has lines come across it and glitches. I was having video store flashbacks, trying to eject the DVD before it gets eaten. To top it off, the disc proudly promises widescreen. In fact, the disc is letterboxed around 1.78 and does feature more information. How do I know this? Because the matte lines don't cover the entire image and you can see the top and bottom of the film image in the frame. Classy.

Sound quality

The disc carries the Dolby Digital logo on the back. Sure! Last I knew one of the signs of Dolby Digital was NOT a scratchy soundtrack. However, the grating sound matches the scratched up image perfectly.

The Film

This was one of the first Bruce Li flicks I ever saw, so it holds a special place in my heart. Actually, it isn't that bad in its fictional depiction of the life of Bruce Lee. Sometime Li is downright scary in his resemblance (watch him when he smiles) and the film has a stellar supporting cast (Carter Wong, Hwang Jang Lee). Plus, the film features some of the most insane white guys ever. Where do they find these dudes? Are they just bumming around HK?

Packaging

Man, here we go again! Beverly Wilshire Filmworks has seen fit not to mention that this film stars Bruce Li. A still of Lee from GAME OF DEATH adorns the cover with a generic Lee shot on the back. Naturally, BWF are hoping for the undiscriminating audience that says, "Hey, look, it's a Bruce Lee film!" What amuses me to no end is the guys who made this disc proudly put their names on it!
