Requisite Boredom
By RebelMom

The battle against the Vong had escalated the past few months. The
Jedi had scattered across the galaxy, both in an effort to help as
well as keep ahead of the few bounty hunters that had taken up
Tsavong Lah's challenge. Mara had fought one off the other day when
she had gone to the lower levels of the city to investigate the
report of suspected Vong intrusion.

This morning she discovered that her necessary actions had possibly
caused her harm.

She exited the refresher in a panic. Startled by her anxiety, Luke
woke up and rushed to her. Holding her tight, he listened to her
concern. "Luke, I'm bleeding."

Understanding the portent of her words, Luke picked her up and gently
laid her on the bed. "Stay there, I'm calling Cilghal."

For once, she didn't argue.

After banishing Luke from the bedroom, Cilghal performed her
examination with extreme diligence. As soon as her probing was
complete, she placed her flipper reassuringly on Mara's shoulder.
"You didn't miscarry. The baby is fine."

Mara's relief was evident as tears streamed down her face. Cilghal
opened the door, allowing a teary eyed Luke to enter. After thanking
Cilghal, he went over to Mara and sat on the bed next to her, hugging
her joyously. Cilghal resumed her seat. "Now that I have eased your
major concern, I have specific instructions for both of you. I want
you to listen carefully and follow them to the letter."

Luke and Mara nodded in agreement. Cilghal's bulbous eyes focused on
Mara. "The spotting you experienced is an indication that you're
overdoing it. I know that there is a war going on but you'll have to
stay out of it for now. There is still a danger but complete bed rest
should avert it. You are not to leave this bed for five days except
to use the refresher."

Mara opened her mouth to object but was silenced by Cilghal's next
sentence. "I will make it longer if you argue with me."

She turned her attention to Luke. "Master. You need to make sure she
has everything she requires. Keep her comfortable. Provide plenty of
fresh fruits and vegetables and fluids."

Luke nodded. "Certainly."

"And Master." Cilghal leaned forward conspiratorially. "Absolutely
no sexual relations."

Luke blushed and acknowledged with a quick nod. Mara smiled at Luke's
embarrassment, then rearranged her pillows so she could sit up
straighter. "So after five days, I can get up and return to normal
activity?"

Shaking her head, Cilghal answered, "No. Reduced activity and slowly
at that. You are flirting with toxemia, Mara."

Luke added, "I'll make sure she follows your instructions, Cilghal."

Cilghal peered into Luke's eyes and in a serious tone said, "She had
better, for the baby's sake." Then to Mara. "If you do not heed my
instructions, you will find yourself in the medcenter, surrounded by
ysalamiri and hooked up to nutrients."

Mara wanted to vehemently protest Cilghal's implication that she
would harm her own child but refrained because deep inside she
knew how hard it would be for her restrain her activity. She had
always been a doer. The thought of doing absolutely nothing was
appalling but she was responsible for another life now. She would not
let anything harm her child, especially her own actions. "I can
assure you that I will heed your instructions. I have developed a protective

streak in the past few months and will stay put even if it drives me crazy."

Luke grimaced, "It will. And then I'll have to deal with it."

Mara hit his arm and received a reproving look from him. "Mara,
remember NO activity."

She rolled her eyes and fell back on her pillows. Cilghal laughed.
"Good. I'll check you again in five days."

Luke said, "I'll show you out. Be right back, Mara."

Mara sighed heavily when they left the room. She was stuck in this
room for five days! Well, she might as well make the best of a bad
situation. Besides, she had a Jedi Master at her beck and call. She
curled up and went to sleep.

By that evening, Mara was going crazy from boredom and Luke had to
deal with it.
