Located in the greater dog constellation, Canis Major, it is known as “The Dog Star.” It can easily be seen in the winter by locating Orion’s belt, three stars in the Orion constellation. If you follow these three stars, you will see Sirius, just above the horizon. Ancient Egyptians started calling Sirius the dog star after their god Osiris and because it shone for most of their summer they believed it to be responsible for the heat.
