Marine Career Institute was founded in 1988 by Captain Frank Myers to fill a need for maritime training in surveying and ship safety.  The Institute functioned from 1988 to 1993 in affiliation with Marine Survey Seminars of Newport, RI., primarily to train marine surveying in week long seminars. The following year a new 3 day program "Surveying for Small Craft Damage" was added.

In 1994 the Institute was approved by the United States Coast Guard to train "Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety" to vessel owners and operators.

In 1999 a program was offered to certify marine surveyors as "Certified Marine Consultants". This is done through an extensive program of study and testing by an independant testing agencies.

In 2005 the Institute became affiliated with a university which agreed to offer an associates and bachelors degree program in Marine Science. During the same year the Institute accepted the responsibility for training of volunteer crew members on the S.S. American Victory Memorial and Museum ship,  located in Tampa, FL.

From 1988 to the present day the Institute has trained hundreds of owners, operators, seamen and individuals in vessel safety, surveying and marine consulting.
