Marcelo Uzcátegui Andrade, concertist of guitar and Ecuadorian composer,
was born in Quito - Ecuador on november 23th, 1959. Great part of his musical
formation has been as autodidactic since very early years. In 1974, he founded
a musical group called "ILUMAN" whose purpose was the rescue and interpretation
of Ecuadorian and folkloric music from the "Andes", in such a period he did
some investigations on different musical instruments and rhythms, specially in
the cities of Otavalo, Ilumán, Cayambe located at the northern part of
Quito - Ecuador. All this work of investigation took him a period of ten years.
In 1976 is a participant in the Seminary of classical guitar conducted by the Uruguayan master Abel Carlevaro in Quito, and in 1987 as participant in the seminary of "depuration of the technique of classical guitar" by the Venezuelan master Alirio Diaz, carried out in the "Culture House" of Quito - Ecuador.
He has been promoter and conductor of chamber musical groups at the National Conservatory of Quito, performing concerts with works of classical and Ecuadorian composers for guitar and quintet of winds. In 1987 an 1988 was teacher at National Conservatory of Quito in the subject of concert guitar.
Marcelo Uzcátegui has performed as a soloist with the National Symphonic Orchestra in Quito with the following works. "Adagio for guitar and strings" of Marcelo Uzcátegui, May 1986. "Concert for guitar and orchestra" of Heitor Villalobos, April 1990. "Concierto de Aranjuez "of Joaquin Rodrigo, October 1992. "Ultimas pinceladas sinfónicas al clasicismo" of Marcelo Uzcátegui, May 1998.
He gained the second prize in the first open contest of composition organized by National Conservatory of Quito and Banco de Desarrollo of Ecuador with the work Symphonic Fantasy "Egloga Oriental" in April of 1987 for orchestra.
In 1989, he went to Europe to promote activities as concertist and composer. During his stay specially in Sweden and Denmark is invited by the Danish guitarrist Lars Trier to give lectures on academic latinamerican guitar in the National Conservatory of Copenhagen - Denmark.
Among his important works we find, "pieces for solo guitar", "suites for guitar and quintet of winds", Symphonic fantasy "Egloga Oriental", "suite concertante for guitar and orchestra". "Ultimas pinceladas sinfónicas al clasicismo" - Concert No. 2 for guitar and orchestra, and his last composition, Symphonic Legend "LLanganates".
All these works have been performed by the National Symphonic Orchestra of Quito, Symphonic Orchestra of Cuenca, Symphonic Orchestra of Loja under the conduction of the masters Alvaro Manzano, Diego Grijalva and Medardo Caisabanda from Ecuador and invited conductors as Carlota Mestanza from Peru, Robert Newell from United States and Viktor Bürger from Austria.
Marcelo Uzcátegui has been one of the best young composers who has enriched the ecuadorian musical staff under a neoclassical style, and one of the few composers who have written concerts for guitar and orchestra apart from Luis Humberto Salgado.
