Cleaning Vinyl...

"If the record is simply dusty, but otherwise clean, then use a carbon fibre brush to get the dust off (works better than a cloth), and every so often give the record a wipe with a Calotherm Anti-Static cloth. Don't use anti-static sprays beacause they can cause popping noises on the vinyl when playing.

If the record is old or second-hand then it will almost certainly have chemical dirt on it, such as beer, or cigarette smoke, or greasy fingermarks, etc... You can clean this off with soap and water. Use a spare carbon fibre brush (because the bristles will shed) to work the soapy solution into the grooves, and rinse straight away with clean water (preferably distilled). Don't let the soap dry, and don't leave the record in soak or use hot water, because it might warp.

A better method of wet cleaning is to use 1 part lab/tech-grade Isopropl alcohol to 4 parts distilled water, and then rinse clean with more distilled water. If you can't find the IPA then you can use vodka, but dilute it a bit more. Don't use methanol, ethanol, or Surgical Spirit because this will damage the vinyl."
