Johnny Tremain
At first, Johnny’s burned hand caused him a lot of trouble, but in the end, it helped him grow and become a better person. It also helped him fulfill a greater purpose. He couldn’t be a silversmith after burning his hand, so he looked for work elsewhere. He finally got a job delivering papers, after he had learned to ride Goblin, the horse he had to use for his new job. Goblin wasn’t easy to ride. He was easily frightened at even the smallest of movements. But Johnny was patient with the horse and was able to calm him down. The owner of the printing shop helped plan the Boston tea party, and eventually, helped start the Revolutionary War. Soon Johnny was not only delivering papers, but secret messages and plans against the British. His skill at silver smithing made him prideful, but when he lost his ability to work with silver, it taught him a lesson in humility. Disabling his hand not only helped him, but others too. His role in the war helped win America’s independence. Later, he regained the use of his hand, but his hardship taught him a lesson that would last a lifetime. |
