LaDuska, Joseph W.
Born in New York City, Apr. 17, 1889, son of William and Mary LaDuska. He obtained his education in the public schools of Binghamton and prepared for a career at Lowell's Business College. His business experiences were in the industrial plants of Endicott-Johnson Corp., Wilkinson Manufacturing Company, Cosgrove Manufacturing Company and Security Motor Sales. In 1920 he formed a partnership with L.N.Cosney and R.L.Flint , purchasing the business of Kaplan & Gregory. The business, LaFlint Battery Corp., grew to occupy three floors and employ 25 people.Mr. LaDuska withdrew from the compamy and became general manager of Southern Tier Tire Company. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He married in 1909, Helen A. Partridge and had children, Grace C. and Evelyn V.

LaGier, Charles
Born in Gibson, Pa., Spet. 5, 1852, son of George and Mary Ann (Rogers) LaGier.After completing his education, he associated himself with his father and learned the masons trade. He was employed in Endicott as a stone mason and his wife conducted a grocery store for many years. He married, Sept. 24, 1875, in Montrose, Pa., Emma Balch, daughter of Milton and Amorta (Cowles) Balch.and had children, Frank born Aug. 3, 1877, Cora M. born May 24, 1879, Verena Esther born June 18, 1881, Fred Thermon born July 29, 1883 and Arthur Milton born June 27, 1887.

LaGrange, Moses
Born in Vestal, June 21, 1840, son of John and Eliza (Elster) LaGrange. He attended school and worked for his father, a farmer. He bought land in Alabama which he converted into an orange grove of 700 tress. With the exception of his trips to the orange groves he spent his entire life in Vestal.He had seen military service in Company I New York Engineers. He served as town clerk, trustee of the Board of Education, assessor, and justice of the peace.. He married , June 13, 1868, Alice Amelia Taylor, daughter of Ambrose and Eliza (Mersereau) Taylor. They had children, Delbert G. born Nov. 12, 1873 , who married first , Ruth White and second, Myra Blinn, and Susie born June 25, 1878.

LaRouche, Arthur Lewis
Born in South Manchester, Conn., Apr. 7, 1887, son of James Hnery and Letitia (Beard) LaRouche. He graduated from Binghamton High School and entered Union College of Schenectady, graduating with a Bachelors of Engineering degree. He entered the office of the city engineer and held the position until enlisting for war service. Upon his discharge, he accepted a position once again with the city engineers and was appointed commissioner of public works. He was a member of the Masons, Shriners and Kiwanis Club. He married in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1915, Eleanor Leigh Upton, daughter of George L. and Leila Upton. They had one son, Arthur L., Jr. born May 4, 1920.

Lainhart, Theodore J.
Born in Union, NY, May 5, 1886, son of George and Ladorma (Jewett) Lainhart. He graduated from Union High School and Lowell Business College in Binghamton. He became identified with Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company He was a member of the Masons, Shriners and Rotary Club.

Lacey, Arthur Truman
Born in Bradford County, Pa., May 19, 1870, son of Truman I. and Clara P. (Burch) Lacey. The family came to Binghamton when he was an infant. He was educated in the schools here and followed his father's example in a choice of career. He studied archirect and became associated with his father's company. He planned and constructed many buildings in the city, including the Press Building, St. James Church in Johnson City, Security Mutual and Kalurah Temple. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Binghamton Club, Red Men, Elks and Masons. He married in 1894, Florence A. Talbot and had children, Helen, Harold T., Truman and George T.

Lacey, Elmer Bolles
Born in West Auburn, Pa., Jan. 31, 181870, son of Alonzo and Philena (Bolles) Lacey. He attended public schools and entered Elmira Business College. He became associated with his father in the merchantile business. After some years, he moved to Endicott and where he began contracting and building. He was manager of the Endicott Lumber & Box Company and was later superintendent at Endiott-Johnson Corp.He was identified with the State Bank of Endicott, a member of the Mason and Shriners.He married in Auburn Four Corners, Pa., Oct. 27, 1892, May Titman, daughtre of Dwight and Alvira (Kirkhuff) Titman. They had children, Arthur born July 29, 1893, Margaret and Mildred, twins, born Mar. 31, 1896 and Annis born Jan. 2, 1900.

Lacey, Robert R.
Born in Dryden, Cortland County, NY, Aug. 19. 1889, son of Lewsi V. and Carrie S. (Theleman) Lacey. He received his education in the schools of Lisle and took a position as telegrapher in an office in Cortland. He took accountacy at Eastman's School in Poughkeepsie, NY and a business course at Lowells School in Binghamton. He was a court stenographer and engaged in the real eastate business. He started the Binghamton Candy Company which grew to include the entire block and five floors. Besides his candy business, he was active in the banking circles and was a director of the Citizens Bank. He was a member of theNational Confectioners Association of America, Binghamton Country Club and the Shriners. He married Jan. 2, 1911, Hazel F. Bloomer, daughter of John , propietor of Lowell Business College, and Anna A. (Gardner) Bloomer. They had children, Anette born Feb. 8, 1912 and Robert R., Jr. born Dec. 28, 1920.

Lange, William F.
Born in Clarks Green, Pa., June 30, 1872, son of George W. and Louisa (Hartman) Lange. His father was a shoemaker and brought his children up with a good education of home teaching. He prepared for teaching which he continued for more than thirty years. He was postmaster of Oauquaga and his hobby consisted of raising bees. He served in the war , 13th Reg. Co. E, Honesdale, Pa. He married Aug. 30, 1892, in Binghamton, Ida Clendening, daughter of James and Margaret (Moat) Clendening. They had children, William born Sept. 27, 1893 and Marjorie born Nov. 25, 1895.

Lappeus, John Chivers Stafford
Born in Hornellsville, NY, Sept. 19, 1878, son of Rev. Daniel E.Paddock and Mary Elizabeth (Stafford) Lappeus. He received his early studies in the local schools and attended Keystone Academy in Factoryville, Pa., therafter matriculating at the medical school of University of Buffalo. He established himself in the practice of medicine in Binghamton and served as a member of the staff at City Hosp. He was chief physician of the Child Welfare Department and attending physician for the Susquehanna Valley Orphan's Home. He was a member of the American Medical Association, New York State Medical Society, Masons, Shriners, Alumni Association of the University of Buffalo, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and Binghamton Country Club. He married first, in 1904, Charlotte Wright, daughter of William H. and Annette (Stickney) Wright and second, May 1922, Edna Smith Wilson, daughter of Clarence Belford and Frances (Crandall) Smith. Children of his first marriage, Sarah A. born 1906 and Charlotte born 1910. Children of Edna Smith Wilson's first marriage and, therefore his step-children, are Frances Randall born 1907, Priscilla Guthrie born 1910 and Belford Hudson born 1913.

Larrabee, Clinton Eugene
Born in Binghamton, Feb. 2, 1880, son of Leroy Edward , a native of Delhi, Onondaga County, NY, and Louisa M. (Boss) Larrabee. He attended local schools and took a course in engineering with International Correspondence School. His first employment was found in Weed's clothing store as a clerk and later with R.B.Truesdell, a leading leather goods store. He desired greatly to learn the trade of machinist, and took an apprenticeship with Shapely & Wells. He became associated with Time Recording Company becoming the first regular draftsman employed by the company.As the company advanced, he became chief engineer and was inventor and patentee of many time-recording devices. He married July 31, 1905, Ora Belle Gay, daughter of William and May Gay of Fabius, Onondaga County, NY and had children, Leroy Clinton born Nov. 2, 1906, Schuyler Gay born May 27, 1913 and Barbara Jeanette born June 28, 1917 and died Sept. 23, 1821.

Lauder, James
Born in New York City, Oct. 7, 1859, son of Isaac , native of Glasgow, Scotland, and Emma (Skinner) Lauder. He received his education in the schools of Binghamton and became associated with his father's business of excellence and artistic merit in memorials, manusoleums amd monumental works. He was a memberof Masons, Odd Fellows, Shriners, Red Men, Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis. He marreid Mar. 23, 1885, Mary E. Wentz , daughter of John E. and Charlotte (Burghardt) Wentz.

Lawrence, John J.
Born in Shropshire, England, Mar.18, 1867, son of Edward Jane (Jones) Lawrence.He was educated at Cheney Longville School, the Henry Coward School of Bishop's Castle and Bourne College in Birmingham. Having served as assistant minister, he was ordained as a minister of the Primitive Methodist in May 1891 and became pastor of the Dudley Road Church , Wolverhampton. He later became pastor of the James Street Churcch of Paisley, Scotland. He came to America in 1894 to the Presbytery of Syracuse, serving at Fulton, NY, Canadaigua, NY, Albany, NY and finally to Binghamton's First Presbyterian Church. He married first in 1891, Clara A. Beamond of Norbury, Engalnd and second, Florence Green, daughter of Sir George Green of Glasgow, Scotland. He had children, William Ewart, Clara Winifred who married Francis Lipscomb, Evelyn L. who married Roy Patten and George E.

Lemon, Willard B.
Born in Binghamton, Nov. 17, 1864, son of Michael H. and Minerva D. (Harris) Lemon. He received his education in the public schools and took a course at Lowell Business College.His first entry in the commercial life was with D.Appleton & Company. In 1885 he deceided to go in to the lumber business and was associated with A. Roberson & Son, one of the largest in this part of the state. He married, in 1886, Sarah D. Loveland and had one child, Edith Coreen.

Leonard, Arthur M.
Born in Susquehanna County, Pa., Feb. 16, 1884, son of Edwin A. and Mary (Miles) Leonard. After completing his education, he went to Selma, Alabama and was in the employ of a jewelry business for three years. He then went to Calif. for two years, being in the same line of trade. He returned to this area, locating in Cooperstown, NY before coming to Binghamton, in 1912 where he entered into the jewelry business on his own. His beginning was on a small scale and he started by opening a repair shop in a small room in the back of the Exchange building. He was an expert workman and had built up a trade in four years that required his move to a larger space and he moved to the front of that location. While the business continued to grow, it was necessary for him to secure more space and he moved to Court St. where he had one of the finest , most eloborate and complete displays of jewelry in Binghamton. He was a member of the Masons and Chamber of Commerce. He married in 1920, Olive L. Henderson.

Lewis, William L.
Born in Lisle, NY, June 27, 1887, son of Alonzo D. , a native of New Haven, Conn and Mary (Robinson) Lewis , a native of Slaterville Springs, NY.He attended school in Lisle and high school in Bingahmton. He commenced the study of law in the offices of Hinman, Howard & Kattell and was admitted to the bar in 1910. He formed a partnership with James K. Nichols with offices in the Secutiry Mutual Building. He was a member of the Masons, the Binghamton Country Club and Binghamton Club.

Lewis, Col. Hazzard
Born in Windham County, Conn., 1794, son of Marshall Lewis. He attended schools there till the age of 15 when he came with his father to Binghamton and engaged in the lumber business. Hazzard Lewis was prosperious in business and was a power in this small village. He was extremely influential in bringing the Chenango Canal project to a successful consumation. He caused the "Lewis House" to be erected, the leading holstery in Binghamton at the time, and was owner of the ferry company which operated over the Chenango river. He played an important role in the building of Rock Bottom Dam on the Susquehanna river and was chief promoter and owner of the dam. At one time, with Christor Eldredge and John Collier he owned the entire south side of the city. He purchased a large tract of land three miles from Binghamton on the Susquehanna at Vestal, known as the Hazzard Lewis farm. He married 1822 in Farmer, Senaca County, NY , Maria Squires, daughter of Selah Squires, who was born in Binghamton, but raised in the village of Farmer. Their children were, Morgan, Frederick, Jane, Caroline and two who died in infancy.

Lewis, Malcom Wallace
Born in eene, Chenango County, NY, Oct. 16, 1900, son of James Atwater and Mary Elizabeth (Heavner) Lewis.. He received his educationin in his native town and was associated with his father in farming. In 1917 he entered the employ of Standard Oil Company in Sanataria Springs He married Jan. 1, 1923, Thelma Windsor, daughter of James E. and Ida(Lewis) Windsor of Cuba, NY.

Lewis, Sherman H.
Born in Susquehanna, Pa., Mar. 18, 1865, son of Robinson Catherine (Roberts) Lewis. He came to Binghamton when 21 and secured employment with the drug firm Tupper, Walden & Whiting. He later went in the employ of Cleves Drug Company. In 1905, he entered business for himself, establishing himself as an automobile dealer. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Automobile Dealers Association, Binghamton Country Club, Sportsmens Club, Binghamton Rifle Club, the Masons and Shriners. He married in 1889, Ive Van Wagner, of Chenango County, NY and had one child, Margaret who married Edward Roberts.

Link, Edwin A.
Born in Terre Haute, Indianna, May 8, 1870, and educated in the public schools of Chicago, Illinois. His first work experience was with C.A.Smith & Company, manufacturers of pianos of that city. He came to Binghamton in 1910 and was founder and president of Link Piano Company of Binghamton.. He was manufacturer of the player and automatic piano's occupying six floors of 183-185 Water Street and employing sixty people. He was a member of the Masons, Elks, Chamber of Commerce, Binghamton Club and Binghamton Country Club.He married Katherine Martin of Illinois, daughter of Dr. W.S. and Katherine (Thompson ) Martin.They had two sons, George T. and Edwin A., Jr.

Lippincott, Thompson B. Jr.
Born in Glenhazel, Pa. son of Thompson B. and Philena (Davall) Thompson. He attended public schools in Lakewood, Pa., took a one year business course and immediately began to learn the feed and coal business. He became in charge of the Harpersville Feed and Coal Company, owned by his father. He remained single.

Little, Frank P.
Born in New York City, Jan 10, 1869, son of Dr. Joseph D. and Eloise Susan Little. He attended schools of candor, Tioga County, NY and entered Eastman Business College. He became associated with Endicott-Johnson Corp. and was postmaster.He married July 14, 1901, in Johnson City, Arvilla Seagers, daughter of Rev. Vine Martin and Margaret Seagers. They had children, Harold Bacon and Earl Seagers, twins, born Feb. 14, 1904.

Loomis, Albert Gurdon, Jr.
Born in Deposit, NY, Feb. 16, 1893, son of Albert G. Loomis. He attended schools and began to make his own way at a very early age. The World War claimed his services for two years and upon discharge, he returned to Deposit and purchased a restaurant. He was very successful, serving a high quality of fine food. He was a member of the Mason and Elks. He married June 30, 1920 in Deposit, Frances Elizabeth Gill, daughter of Leroy and Edith(Post) Gill.

Lord, Alfred A.
Born in Nineveh, NY, Aug. 30, 1845 and received his education there. In 1861 he enlisted in the war at age 16 and was wounded in the leg, captured at Cedar Creek, Va. He suffered confinement at Pemberton Prison and Libby Prison in North Carolina where he contracted tyfoid fever. He returned to Binghamton and was active in the commercial life, establishing a mens furnishing store on Court Street. He was justice of the peace and elected as Superintendent of the Poor. He was a member of the Masons and Shriners. He married , first, in Bainbridge, Chenango County, NY,Sept. 26, 1866, Sarah Taylor and had children, Rose M. born Mar. 16, 1868, George E. born May 8, 1870, Wylford J. born Feb. 2, 1873 and Lillian born Nov. 27, 1875. He married second, in Binghamton, May 12, 1893, Emelia Weeks and third, May 12, 1920, in Norwich, NY, May Brewer.

Lord, Chester B.
Born in Dedham, Mass., Dec. 5, 1875, son of William H. and Mary A. (Endicott) Lord and received his education there. At the age of sixteen, he became a clerk and later a salesman for various shoe manufactuerers of Boston. He came to Binghamton in 1910 in the employ of Lestershire Manufacturing Company which later became Endicott-Johnson Corp. of which he was a co-partner. He became vice president of the company. He married in Brooklyn, NY, June 1908, Any Lester, Daughter of David and Delia (Lockwood) Lester and had one child, Chester B. Lord, Jr. born Aug. 22, 1910.

Loughlin, Bernard S.
Born in Kirkwood, NY, May 29, 1874, son of Bryan and Anna (McCabe) Loughlin.His parents were agriculturists and soon after completing his schooling, he began his life's work in helping his father , and as he grew to manhood he continued in the same operation, eventually owning a farm of 180 acres of his own. He married Mar. 30, 1910, Catherine O'Neil, born in Chicago, daughter of Edward and Anna (O'Connell) O'Neil.

Lounsberry, Dr.Robert Lansing
Born in Smithboro, NY, Feb. 14, 1869, son of Benjamin L. and Anna (Silvernail) Lounsberry. He completed his elementary education, took a course at Wyoming Seminary and entered New York University, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine degree. He practiced medicine in Owego and Buffalo, before coming to Binghamton . He was apponited medical director of Security Mutual Life Insurance Company.He was a member of the Mason, Rotary Club and Elks.He married in Nichols, NY, Nov. 27, 1891, Emma Harris, daughter of Oliver P. and Harriet E. Harris.

Lowell, Mason
Born in Washington County, NY, May 30, 1871, son of Goerge W. and Adelaide V. (Lilly) Lowell. His education was acquired in the public schools of his home community and spent seven consecutive seasons with the Lake Champlain Transportation working his way from cabin boy to that of purser. He then went to Mississippiand was identified withthe lumber industry in thwe position of telegrapher and postmaster. He came to Binghamton in 1893 to fill a position with Taylor & Son, wholesale jeweler, and later went in to partnership and the company was then known as Taylor & Lowell. He withdrew from this frim, establishing his own with T.E.Darrow and known as Lowell & Darrow. He sold his interest to H.A.Niles and went into the automotive sales and repair, Lowell & Hammond for some time. In 1913, he established the firm Owell, Bailey & Company, Inc., dealing in both retail and wholesale jewelry. He was a member of the Masons, Chamber of Commerce and Binghamton Country Club. He married in 1901, Ethel Jones of St. Johnsbury, Vermont and had children, Ida born in 1904, Mason, Jr. born 1907 and Adeliade C. born 1913.

Lyon, Alfred H.
Born in Binghamton, Feb. 9, 1863, son of Addison J., of Dutchess County, NY and Henrietta (Cooper) Lyon of Corning, NY. He received his education in the public schoolsof Binghamton and began his career as a clerk in a gentlemen's furnishing store. He later associated himself with McHenry & Clark, with whom he learned the art of making cutom shirts. He married Mar. 24, 1880, Myra B. Earl, daughter of Orlando and Phoebe (Curran) Earl and had children, Earl G. who married Edith Rink, Leda H. who married William Woolbridge, Mary B., who married Carl B. Gulliver, Arthur S. who married Margaret Moon and Clinton .

Lyon, Frank D.
Born in Oxford, Chenango County, NY, Mar. 7, 1855, son of John W. and Sarah Jane (Preston) Lyon. He received his education in the public schools of Binghamton and entered Cornell Univsersity. He chose the fire insurance business as his interest and went to Omaha, Nebraska to do special agency and adjusting work. He later returned to Binghamton and engaged in engineering and road work. He was a member of the Masons. He married Sept. 1, 1880, Florence L. Lyon, daughter of Thomas J. and Ellen (Kelley) Lyon of Vermont. They had children, J. Rexford and Walter J.

Lyon, Hon. George Frederick
Born in the town of Barker, July 13, 1849, son of Harry and Amelia (Livermore) Lyon. He attended the schools of Binghamton and entered Hamilton College where he studied law. He continued the study of law with Chapman & Martin, prominent attorneys in the state of New York. He received a partnership with them and was admitted to the bar 1875. He was nominated justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York and served for twenty four years.He married Apr. 9, 1884, Elizabeth Radcliff Mather, daughter of Henry and Frances (Whiting) Mather

Mac Arthur, Archibald
Born in Cellardyke, Fifeshire, Scotland, Dec. 31, 1869, son of Archibald and Jane (Murray) MacArthur. He began his schooling in Conn. and completed it in New York City and New Jersey. He served an apprenticeship with Lawrence & Company in Mass.In 1890, he came to Fowler, Dick & Walker and started at the bottom of the ladder to become in charge of a store in Indianna. He later returned to the company here as chief financeial officer and became vice-president. He married Laura C. Curran, daughter of Charles and Caroline (French) Curran.

Mac Clary, Thomas Arthur
Born in Owego, Tioga County, NY, Aug. 9, 1873, son of Rexford and Almira (Tilbury) MacClary. He graduated from Union Free Academy and took a special course at Buffalo Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1899 and after two years of practicing law in Buffalo, he was active in Broome County. He had an office in the Farmers Bank building in Union with an extensive clientele and handled a general line of insurance. He was president of Endicott Lumber & Box, vice pressident of the Farmers National Bank of Union, an attorney for the village of Endicott, a member of the Masons, Shriners, Rotary Club and Binghamton Country Club. He married in 1907, Laura A. Dean, and had one son, Thomas Jean born in 1916.

MacDonald, Arthur C.
Born in Fairview, New Jersey, Aug. 28, 1884, son of the famous Dr. Jeremiah, of New York City and Alida Mary MacDonald. He received his early education in the pubilc schools of Middletown, NY and completed high school in Binghamton. . He found employment in the cigar factory where he remained for four years. He became associated with the advertisement department of his father's business and remained for five years. He then went to Syracuse until the death of his father, returning to become the head of the Atlas Printing Company , established by his father. He was a member of the Masons, Shriners, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce and Elks Club. He married in Spet. 12, 1906, Fannie Noyes, daughter of Charles H. and Ella V. Noyes of Port Dickinson. They had twin boys born in Syracuse, NY and died in infancy.

McCauley, James Neal
Also uncle of Louis Gheen McCauley, served during the entire Civil War as a private, engaging in nine of the principal battles.

McCauley, Louis Gheen
Born in Susquehann, Pa., Sept. 20, 1877, son of Captain J.R.and Eva (Griswold )McCauley. After studies in public schools he took a course at Westchester Normal School and received a scholarship to Leigh University graduating with a degree of Mechanical Engineering. He went with Western Air Brake Company. His next connection was with the Gem Manufacturing Company, die makers and metal workers. He went with the Canadian ToledoTooling Computing Scale Company as draftsman and engineer. He came to Binghamton in 1909 and became engineer for Fairbanks CVompany. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Shriners and American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He married in 1905, Pauline Bartlett and had children, Robert B. born 1916 and Jack B. who died in infancy.

McCauley, Major L.G.
Brother of Capt. McCauley and uncl to Louis Gheen, he was born Spet. 2, 1837 in Westchester, Pa. When the Civil War broke out, he was mustered in service June 18, 1861 as first sergeant. He was promoted to first lieutenent and lost his right arm in the battle aof Charles City Crossroads. He was captured and wounded and held at Libby Prison. Herejoined his regiment and fought in battle with one arm.

McDevitt, Edward L.
Born in Binghamton, July 31, 1877, son of James and Bridget (O'Neil) McDevitt. , the father a native of New York City and the mother of County Clare, Ireland. He attended St. Patrick's Parochial School and Binghamton High School and immediately became associated with his father in business. He continued there until the death of the father, when he joined his brother , James, in the formation of McDevitt Brothers , oldest established undertakers in the city. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Elks, and the Sportsmen's Club. He married in 1906, Anna M. Downs, of Albany and had children, Edward L. born 1908 and James G. born in 1912.

McDonald, John A.
Born in Binghamton, Mar.29, 1882, son of John and Theresa (Callan) McDonald. After completing high school, he entered the employ of McTighe Grocery Company, wholesale grocerers. As vice-president and treasurer, he has taken responsibility for the growth of the company and extension of operations over a territory of one hundred miles. He married in 1907, Josephine G. Reardon and had children, Mary born in 1910, Rose born in 1911, Rita born in 1913, John born in 1915, William born in 1917, Joseph born in 1919 and James born in1920.

McGarity, John W.
Born in Coshocton County, Ohio, Mar. 26, 1892, son of James A. and Margaret (Wilson) McGarity, both of Scotland. He was educated in the schools of Coshocton and his first employment was with the Forest Rangers in Boston, Mass. Coming to Binghamton, he was active in the municipal government, working under three mayors. After enlisting for war service, he accpeted a position with Travelers Insurance Company. He then opened his own insurance offices in the People's Trust Bank Building and was very successful.

Manier, Robert William
Born in inghamton, July 11, 1867, son of James W. and Emma (Carver) Manier. He attended public schools and entered business with the Susquehanna Valley Bank. In 1888, he associated with Binghamton Gas & Electric Company of which he became secretary and treasurer. He was a member of the Merchants and Advertisers Association and the Binghamton Club. He married, June 6, 1888, in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, Fanny Fern Learning, daughter of Richard and Mary (Fern) Learning. They had children, E. Fern and Ralph Learning.

Mann, William A.
Born in Otsego County, Oct. 25, 1868, son of Ezra and Julianna (Carnick) Mann. He atended public schools, after which he remained on the family farm for many years.He later engaged in business in Union Center as keeper of a general store. He married, Apr. 30, 1892 at Whitney Ppoint, NY, Mary Elizabeth Gaylord, daughter of Aaron and Sarah Jane (Clyde) Gaylord. They had children, Howard W. born Feb. 9, 1893, married Myrtle Howard, Leon Arthur born Aug. 16, 1894, married Bessie Robinson, Viva Julianna born Apr. 24, 1896, Loren Alvah born Apr. 23, 1903, Stewart Gaylord born Apr. 1, 1903 and Harold Elyn born May 15, 1907.

Manouse, Constantine P.
Born in Turkey Aug. 4, 1888, son of Peter and Athena Manouse and grew to manhood, attending public schools. At an early age he learned the trade of tailor, which he followed for some years , and after coming to America engaged in this line of work on his own account. From a modest start with a small shop, his business increased to an extent where he was in a position to open a store, where he sold furnishings, in addition to making clothes to order.He married, July 1, 1917, in Sayre, Pa., Blanche Boyles born in Hills Grove, daughter of George and Minnie (Dunlap) Boyles and had one daughter, Constance, who was killed by automobile, July 29, 1922.

Marcy, John, Jr.
Born in Greene, Chenango County, NY, Oct. 29, 1877, son of John and Elizabeth (Carter) Marcy. He graduated from Greene High School and entered Cornell University Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1901.He came to Binghamton and opened his own offices in the Security Mutual Building. He was attorney for the Broome County Bar Association and a member of the Masons, Elks and Shriners. He married in 1907, Elizabeth Chapman of Virginia and had one son, Robert Chapman born Dec. 20, 1917.

Marshall, Sidney J.
Born in England, May 22, 1876, son of John and Ada (Brigdgman) Marshall. He was educated in English schools and pursued special courses with the International Correspondence School. His first position in the buciness world was with National Contracting Company of Buffalo, a position he held until the outbreak of the Spanish-American war. After his enlistment was completed he spent three and a half years with the Salt Springs National Bank in Syracuse. Following that engagement he sought employment with Armour & Company of Chicago, Il.. He later in 1915, organized Endicott Forging and Manufacturing Company in Endicott and was it's president. He was a member of the Society of Automobile Engineers, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, and the Binghamton Club. He married in 1902, Jennie Grace Weed, of Syracuse and had children, Dorothy born May 17, 1906, Marian born Oct. 15, 1907 and John Willard born Aug. 11, 1912.

Martin, Henry S.
Born in Chaseville, Otsego County, NY, Sept. 8, 1868, son of Rev. Albert and Betsey Martin. He attended public schools and Cook Academy. Following this he attened Colgate University and took a course at Comer Business College in Boston. His first business was in a wholesale tea and coffee house which he worked prior coming to Binghamton.Upon locating here, he established himself in the real estate and insurance business and associated himself with his uncle, Nelson Stow, inventor of the Stow flexible shaft. He married in 1892, Alida Thomas of Cleveland, Ohio.

Mattice, Frank
Born in Glencastle, NY, Mar. 8, 1871, son Of Nelson and Rachel (Monroe) Mattice. After completing his education in the public schools, he associated himself with his father and in due course became mail clerk for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad Lines. He is the owner of an extensive farm in Union. He married July 11, 1899 in Waverly, NY, Fannie L. Guston born in Luther Mills, Pa., daughter of Charles S. and Abigail (Mead) Guston.

Mattoon, Lerwis S.
Born in Cayuga, June 8, 1870, son of Alonzo and Martha (Turner) Mattoon. After completing his schooling, he followed in his fathers occupation of farming for twenty years. He then built the Mattoon Hotel, which he successfully conducted for several years. In 1911, he assumed the charge of the Hotel Frederick in Endciott and held positon of manager. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, the Woodsmen, Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He married June 3, 1905 at Great Bend, Pa, Mary E, Root born in Oxford, NY, daughter of James and Annie E. (McGrath) Root.

McCauley, James Neal
Also uncle of Louis Gheen McCauley, served during the entire Civil War as a private, engaging in nine of the principal battles.

McHarg, Ernest J.
Born in Schenevis, Otsego County, NY, Jan. 2, 1868, son of John and Annie (Bennett) McHarg. He graduated from the Free School and Academy of that town and became associated with his father in the express business. Coming to Binghamton, he entered the employ of the National Express Company nad later the Foote Company in Nunda, NY, manufacturers of concrete mixers. He later established his own business, E.J.McHarg Company, and actedas the sole manufacture er of the concrete mixer in the western states. He married in 1899, Lucy E. Mitchell, daughter of Harrison and Mary E. (Wilcox) Mitchell.They had two daughters, Elizabeth W. born 1902 and Annie B. born 1903.

McHenry, Roy Congdon
Born in Binghamton, Jan. 25, 1881, son of Clinton F., a native of Deposit, and Sarah S. (Congdon) McHenry. He graduated from Binghamton High School and Cornell Univserity with a Bachelor of Law degree. He was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Binghamton. He received an appointment in the land department of the United State Government. and later with the Department of Justice. He was appointed special assistant U .S. district attorney He was a member of the Masons, founder of the Scranton Rifle Club, Binghamton Rifle Club, and the Shriners. He had two children, Margaret S. and Lois V.

McIntyre, Conrad O.
Born in New Berlin, Chenango County, NY, May 8, 1886, son of Davis and Sarah McIntyre. He attended the public schools of his birthplace and entered Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. After acquiring his degree, he located in Endicott, where he practiced his profession with success and prestige. He was a member of the Masons, Elks and Rotary Club. He married Dec. 9, 1922, Mary Campbell of Portsmouth, Va.

McKay, Charles Richard
Born in Westfield, Mass., Dec. 20, 1895, son of J.R.and Marian (Mathewson) McKay of Bath, Maine. He received his education in the public schools of Waverly and Van Etten, NY. His first employment was with Austin Organ Company in Hartford, Conn. and then in Hagerstown, Maryland where he was associated with M.P.Moeller Company, manufacturers of fine pipe organs. After a time he went to Elmira, NY and engaged in business for himself tuning and repairing pipe organs. He enlisted in the army in 1918 and returning to civilan life, he came to Binghamton and was associated with Beaman Organ Company as general manager. He was a member of the Mason. He married Aug, 22, 1918, Ruth Olive Pontz of Johnson City, NY, daughter of Christopher H. and Mary Pontz.

McKinney, Charles
Born in East Bloomfield, NY, son of Rev. Sabin and Elizabeth (Corliss) McKinney. Attending the public schools where he was born until the year 1868, he entered the coal office of his uncle, Charles McKinney who brought the first barge of coal into the city by way of the Chenango canal. The firm grew and offices were opened in Utica, NY. where he remained until the death of his uncle, when he returned and was head of the offices here. He was a member of the Masons and Rotary Club. He married in Utica, NY Apr. 26, 1897, Caroline Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Giles Crofut and Jane (Wilson) Smith. They had one daughter, Mrele who married Edward Van Gorder.

McKinney, Corliss
Born in Fredonia, Chataugua County, NY, Jan. 6, 1848, son of Rev. Sabin and Elizabeth Shelton (Corliss) McKinney.He receieved his education in the public schools of Binghamton and entered Union College, graduating with a degree of Civil Engineer. He began his career with Isaac T. Perry, a leading architect and later engaged professionaly in the construction of buildings, including the Rockwell block in Oneonta, NY, the McDonald House of Murray St., the Bates House of Front St. and the Bump House on Chenango St. He designed the ceiling in the Assembly Chamber in the capitol in Albany and the ceiling of St. Patrick's Church in Binghamton. He married Jennie E. Seeber.

McLaury, Fred R.
Born in Deposit, NY, Sept. 27, 1872, son of Martin and Susan (Hewitt) McLaury, he received his education in the schools of Sanford. While assisting his father on the farm, he was also able to learn the details of farming and laid the foundation of the success which he achieved. He married in Deposit, Feb. 4, 1902, Frances Butler, daughter of Edward and Martha (Reynols) Butler.

McLean, Charles M.
Born in Otsego County, NY, Apr. 30, 1861, son of Andrew , a native of England and Emily (Davis) McLean. He received his education in the Union Free School in Cooperstown, NY and was employed at various concerns as a carpenter. mastering the trade. In 1895, he came to Binghamton and entered business in his own name until 1917, when he associated with F.W.O'Connell and J.W. Mitchell. He was a member of the Masons, Chamber of Commerce and Masters Builder's Associattion. He married in 1893, Grace M. Crandall of Middlefield, Otsego County, NY and had children, J. Andrew born 1894, Crandall D. born 1897 and Elizabeth born 1899.

Mclean, William Melville
Born in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, May 8, 1858, son of William and Phoebe McLean. He attended the public schools of Cooperstown and secured a position as a clerk in the grocery store of Doubleday & Eldridge. Then, in association with E.D. Hills, he came to Binghamton and founded the firm of Hills, McLeans & Williams. When Mr. Hills retired they took as a partner, Fred Haskins and it became known as Hills, McLeans & Haskins. He married in Springfield, NY, July 1882, Emily J. McLean of Cooperstown, daughter of Andrew and Emily McLean. They had children, Major Floyd, Captain Charles Mossman, Grace E. , E. Delevan and William M., Jr.

McManus, Peter J.
Born in Susquehanna County, Pa., Oct. 5, 1878, son of James and Catherine (Keenan) McManus. He received his education in the public schools and took courses of advanced study at Genessee Wesleyan Seminary. He studied law in the offices of Curtiss, Arms & Keenan and was admitted to the bar in 1905. He formed a partnership with John T. Buckley, a firm active in Binghamton and holding a position among the leading attorney's of the State of New York with offices in the Kilmer building. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks and the Binghamton Country Club. They are recognized authorities in the law of real estate and finance known as McManus & Buckley. He married Oct. 1920, Helen M. Tompkins and had one son, Peter R. born Oct, 23, 1922.

Mead, Herbert S.
Born in Candor, NY, Feb.21, 1895, son of Russell B. and Clara (Summerville) Mead.He attended public schools and from early youth showed a taste for work along mechanical lines. After a few years spent in the employ of others, he engaged in business on his own account in Endicott where he opened a battery station , a sucessful venture. He married Nov. 29, 1920 in Newrak Valley,NY, Anna Hills born in Candor, daughter of Elmer and Carrie (Cartwright) Hills.

Mead, Roger Depew, M.D.
Born in Newark Valley, NY, Nov. 9, 1883, son of Russell Benjamin and Clara Hannah ( Summerville) Mead and completed his education in the schools there. He entered Syracuse University and later prepared for a medical career at Syracuse College of Medicine, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine degree. He interned at Robert Packer Hosp. in Sayre, Pa. , the Lying-In Hosp. in New York City and the New York Post Graduate Hosp.He began private practice in Endicott and was associated with Endicott General Hosp. He was a member of the Broome County Society, American Medical Association, trustee of Universl Instruments Corp., shareholder in the State Bank of Endicott and the Hasbrouk Manufacturing Compny in Marathon, NY, a member of the Masons, Shriners, Odd Fellows, and the Moose Club. He married in Vestal, Nov. 10, 1910, Mary L. Wakeman, daughter of M.H. and D.H. (Kinney) Wakeman. They had children, Roger W. born Feb. 14, 1914 and Russell Benjamin born July 14, 1918.

Meagher, Frederick J.
Born in Binghamton, Dec. 21, 1876, son of Jefferson Meagher, of Ireland , and Mary E. (Sullivan) Meagher. He attended public schools here and graduated from Hamilton College with a Bachelor of Science degree. He began the study of law in the offices of Curtiss & Keenan and later began his own practice with offices in the O'Neil Bldg. He was appointed district attorney of Broome County. He formed a partnership with City Judge Roger Wales and the firm was named Wales & Meagher. He married in 1907, Jane B. O'Neil, and had children, Jefferson F., Frederick F. Jr., Jane F. and Helen E.

Mix, Andrew Friou
Born in Chenango Forks, NY, Apr. 12, 1892, son of James and Mary Augusta (Ferris) Mix. He graduated from Endicott Union High School and secured employment with National Time Recording Company. He enlisted in the service and in 1919 opened insurance offices in Endicott and successfully continued. He was unmarried and made his home with his parents in Endicott.

Mix, Walter J.
Born in Chenango Forks, NY, mAY 24, 1879son of James and Mary Augusta (Ferris) Mix. His education was received in the public schools and he attended Oneonta Normal School. He secured employment with Endicott-Johnson Corp., becomimg superintendent of their restaurant.He was unmarried and made his home with his parents in Endicott.

Moffitt, Francis A.
Born in Nebraska, Mar. 20, 1889, son of B.O. and Ruth (Ackley) Moffitt. He attended the public schools of Binghamton and entered the University of Penna. , graduating with a degree of Chemical Engineering. He was employed as a consulting chemist at a laboratory in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. for some years, then associated with his father and brother in the automotive business. B.O. Moffitt & Sons.He married in 1914, Helen Woodruff and had one daughter, Barbara Jane born 1916.

Moffitt, Robert B.
Born in Nebraska, Dec. 16, 1892, son of B.O.and Ruth (Ackley) Moffitt. His family coming to Binghamton in his early childhood, he was educated in the school of this city and as a young man associated with his father in business. He was a member of Automobile Dealers Association, Chamber of Commerce and Masons. He married in 1914, Frances Hodgkin and had children, Marian R. born 1915, Frances E. born 1918 and Jean A. born 1921.

Moody, Edwin H.
Born in Binghamton, May 3, 1879, son of Edwin C. and Helen D. (Wheeler) Moody. After completing his education in public schools, he entered Hamilton College, graduating with a Doctor of Philosphy degree. He then undertook special studies at the New York Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1905, engaging in this line for three years in New York City before returning to Binghamton. He opened offices here in the People's Trust Bank building. He was a member of the Masons, and Shriners. He married, Apr. 13, 1918, Dorothea B. Bradley of New Haven, Conn. and had one child, Franes Wheeler born May 13, 1919.

Moon, Harry E.
Born in Winchester, Indianna, Oct. 3, 1892. His education was begun there and the family moving to Orlando, Florida, he graduated from Orlando High School. He attended Rollins College and took a special at Lowell Business College in Binghamton. His first business was with Western Union Telegraph Company for five years. In 1922, he formed an affilation with A. Reiter Electric Company, interests comprises installation and general contract work and a throughly modern and well stocked sales deparrtment where electrical supplies and fittings are distributed both wholesale and retail. He narried in 1917, Eleanor M. Vosbury and had one son, Willis.

Moon, William W.
Born in Binghamton, Jan. 25, 1885, son of Walter J.and Ella K. (Meagley) Moon. He was educated in the public schools of Binghamton and was associated with his father's firm, the George Q. Moon & Company which represents the third geneartion of grain and milling business.He was also president for Clark Feed Company, operating on allied lines. He married in 1906, Elizabeth L. Knapp of Delaware County.

Moore, Charles H.
Born in Binghamton, Nov. 5, 1873, son of Charles F. and Margaret (Bllomingdale) Moore. Receiving his education in the public schools of Binghamton, he entered Cornell University, after which he became associated with his father in gardening. They worked together for fourteen years until the father's death, when Charles H.became sole owner of the business. Several years later he bought an interest in the Flint Battery Company and became it's president. He married in 1911, Rose Bixby, of Hancock, NY.

Moran, Henry Walter
Born in Mammouth, England, June 15, 1866, son of Thomas and Joan (Jenkins) Moran. Her attended the public school sof his homeland and came to America with his parents at a young age, settling in Pa. He entered the newspaper business and for many years had written articles for magazines and periodicals and newspaper.He retired from the newspaper world and turned his attention to inventing such as a garden cultivator. He married in Scranton, Pa. Winnie Roberts, daighter of John and Ann (Davis) Roberts.

Moran, James H.
Born in Deposit, NY, Aug. 15, 1866, he began the study of telegraphy in his early life, at the Western Union Office in Deposit and became telegrapher for Erie Railroad at Lanesboro, Pa. and Port Jervis, NJ. He started in the hotel business in his hometown and built the Moran Hotel. He married June 30, 1898, Winifred Murphy and had one daughter, Geraldine.

Morgan, Edward Phillips
Born in Pittston, a. Aug. 9, 1889, son of John L. and Anne (Phillips) Morgan. He received his education in the public schools of Binghamton and attended Lowell Business College. He then entered the employ of Bennett & Morgan Company, later became John L. Morgan Company. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He married, Nov. 12, 1905, Lillian Dewey, daughter of Chester F. and Margaret (Lawrence) Dewey. They ahd children, Harold C.born Mar. 28, 1907, Jack E. born Sept. 19, 1912 and Lois Margaret born Sept. 22, 1914.

Morrison, Robert P.
Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Jan.12, 1892, son of Frazier M and Sarah (Raleigh) Morrison. He received his education in the public schools , graduating from Cherry Forks, High School in Ohio. He pursued a special course of study in Portsmouth, Ohio and in 1911, he entered the employ of Vulcan Last Company in Portsmouth as a bookkeeper, contining until his elistment in the army in 1917. He went overseas and saw service in France and returned at the end of the war with the rank of Sergeant. He returned to Vulcan Last Company at their Wisconsin office and later to the Johnson City, NY branch. He married Sept. 3, 1920, Rosamond Lanctot of Haverhill, Mass., daughter of Alfred and Philomene (Paradis) Lanctot.

Morse, Ellis G.
Born in Binghamton, July 31, 1877, son of Hartwell and Kate E. (Johnson) Morse. He attended public schools and was manager for the Powell Coal Company of this city. He married Elizabeth Hall and had one son, Richard H. born July 10, 1906.

Morse, Hartwell
Born in Eaton, Madison County, NY, Apr. 6,, 1843, son of Ellis and Adalina (Bagg) Morse. His education was began in local district schools with one year in Elmira, NY and a course at Cortland Academy at Homer, NY. He then entered the employment of the institution of which he became president, the Bank of Binghamton. He married Kate Johnson of Schuylerville, NY, daughter of Samuel and Lucretia (Gray) Johnson. They had children, Walter H., William Osnorn and Ellis G.

Morse, Walter H.
Born in Binghamton, Nov. 6, 1879, son of Hartwell and Kate E. (Johnson) Morse. He attended public schools and entered the employ of City National Bank , under his father at an early age. He married, Louise Powell and had two sons, Hartwell P. born Nov. 1, 1898 and Stewart Wells born Mar. 17, 1900.

Morse, William Osborn
Born in Binghamton, Nov. 21, 1873, son of Hartwell and Kate E. (Johnson) Morse and after attending public schools, he became manager for the American Linseed Oil Company at offices in Kansas City,Mo. He married Mary Squire and had children, Osborn and Esther, twins, born July 10, 1908.

Murray, Edwin S.
Born in Washtenaw County, Michigan, Mar. 20, 1879, son of Andrew J. and Marietta (Bradford) Murray. His education was acquired in the public schools of Michigan , State Normal College in Michigan and Michigan University, with a degree of A.B. and LL.B.He became associated with Brewer-Titchner Corp.for fourteen years until he identified with Earle H. Baxter in the Baxter-Murray Motor Sales. He married in 1912, Nina F. Doolittle.

Myre, Joseph D.
Born in Quebec, Canada, May 28, 1869, son of Charles and Eleanor (Villeneuve) Myre and was educated in the schools there. He traveled for various concerns over twenty-seven years and in 1917 , he entered the ice cream business. This business connection brought him to Binghamton in 1920 where he held the offices of vice-president and general manager of the Binghamton Ice Cream Company. He married in 1894, Exeline Le Beouf of Quebec, Canada and had one child, Ninita Y. born in 1897.
