Malacandrian Names

Hrossa

The Hrossa are black, 6' - 7' high penguin/otter/seal/stoat-like creatures that Ransom encounters on Malacandra (Mars). They live in the warm handramits (canyons or canals) and grow yellow, orange, and blue food. They also fish. They are the sailors of Malacandra and engage in trade for foodstuffs. They live in villages with beehive-shaped homes and use stone tools. They are the poets and singers of Malacandra. All hnau or intelligent species have adopted the language of the Hrossa as a lingua franca for Malacandra. The Hrossa have "furry" names."

Pfifltriggi

The Pfifltriggi are frog-like creatures who lives in the old ocean bottoms of Malacandra. These ocean bottoms are now lowland forests. The Pfifltriggi are miners for sun's blood (gold) and star's milk (silver). They also like to make things but only if they are difficult to make.

Seroni (Sorns)

The Seroni live in the harandra or the Martian surface. They actually live in caves just below the harandra. They are more solitary than the Hrossa. They are herders and they make cheese. They are the thinkers and scholars of the planet who are in communication with Oyarsa. They use technology that they have devised and that the Pfifltriggi have built for them. For example, they devised the oxygen masks and the Pfifltriggi built them. The Seroni are tall, white, giants with droopy faces. The Seroni have "big-sounding" names.
