MariaPia's Thumbnail Reviews IV

Lost Tales ·Great background research at Lost Tales. The navigation frame graphic is enchanting, visible throughout your wanderings; right-frame backgrounds are complementary and appealing. Amid the tales is a great deal of background, setting the stage for different sections. The Tolkien map is great! The Dragons link doesn't work, rats. My impression is, "I shall return."

· Photographs from Vietnam is an electronic coffee-table book. There are Javascripts for status bar, return Photos from Vietnam link, hover style and a choice of quick loading thumbnails or rollover slide show with (long) pre-load. The site owner claims to be a novice and has learned a lot about navigation and consistency. As for content, this is a large collection of personal photos (I estimate 200) from approx. 20 sources. It is highly personal because the people who submitted know the people and sites in the photos, which gives one pause. There are a couple dozen insider stories as well, very interesting. My impression is "go see it!"

· Deep in the Bush is a group of three folk Deep in the Bush tales for school children from the rainforest of West Africa. There are lesson plans for teachers, play forms of the tales, coloring pages, extensive tips for auditions, acting games, recipes, links to African sites and more. The design is very clean, and there is more depth to the site than is immediately evident. Secret tip: here is the link for the author's homepage, very special, well organized and illustrated. Check especially the Travel image maps! See also Hammurabi Code of Law. My impression is "charming!"

Online Photo Image Technique Online Photographic Image Technique is a service where people post their photos on a message board and the site owner and others critique them. It is highly technical, active and current. I learned so much just browsing for the review! Most of all, I really appreciated the honesty of the responses. Extra special is the last topic, "Image School Forum," where the owner posts one subject per month. This is a site I'm "glad I found."

Shakespeare Homework Helper is an AOL Shakespeare HH homepage that is easily navigable for school children. It sports a status bar script and frames. The strength of the site is that any Shakespeare question can be emailed to the owner! The disclaimer warns students that they will be helped to help themselves, rather than given direct answers, and there are about 25 web links to Shakespearean resources. Best of all is the promise of FAQs, a biography and information on the plays. I can hardly wait! My impression is "nice service."

D Filipino Connection · Check out D Filipino Connection for original artwork decorating each page, such as the featured Travel Gallery showing the site owner in 13 countries! Navigation is easy, nice colors and very intelligent links on the links page. Don't miss the Fascinating Facts; some will you know, but many are unusual! This site is "refreshing."

· Javascript and Java right off the bat at MyBeau's Poetry Site! MyB's Poetry Site There are four 'onLoad' events featuring an applet with a French poem scrolling vertically, a menu with timed change and mouseover tip box, and a stop timer ... I love this stuff! As far as content goes, the owner takes the extra step to bring you photos of famous poets, mouseover French translations of proverbs, and her father's 1930 photos of Indochina. I found this to be a "fun site."

Kim's European Trip Kim and her boyfriend left on March 11, 2000 to backpack in Europe for SEVEN MONTHS! See their route at Kim's European Trip ... very complicated and ambitious. There is also a list of the hostels they will stay in. Two things I hope for them: that they access the webpage somehow and give us updates, and that they are still speaking in seven months. Nice original animations, easy navigation. My impression is "entertaining."

Colleen's Corner · Colleen's Corner features Butterfly Gardening. Learn how to attract butterflies to a garden, and interesting facts about all gardening. Also find submitted and famous poetry, dedications to children and grief, family photos (isn't she an Audrey Hepburn lookalike?), Flower of the Month, and Javascripts for a poll and slideshow of her dog. The site is well organized and the pastels are pleasing. This site is "peaceful."

Les Vinternotes is in French, so here is the key to its navigation, although it is fun enough without understanding it! On the splash screen, select "Oui", then Les Vinternotes select "Skip Animation" in English on the first page ... you get English. Be sure to visit "The Thirteen Wine Symphony" to relate tastes of wines to orchestra instruments (set to "1812 Overture"). There is spiffy macromedia on the first page, DHMTL, plenty of related graphics, frames, an AnfyCam popup, and loads of wine promotion and history. This is one "cool site!"

· Silvermist Graphique has some very special features. The Triple Border graphics, Silvermist Graphique Designer Tables, and Mirror Border Tutorial are very nice. The site's graphics and organization are well done and attractive. For starters, be sure to visit the "new" backgrounds (esp. Valentine) to see how far along this artist is. Her Gallery leaves us hoping for more. Tip: Here is her Vooodu's Cavern of Fun. My impression is "bookmarkable!"

Masters Digital Design · If you can pry yourself away from the attractive and clever Javascript index at Masters Digital Design, you will find a compelling autobiography of the site owner, a nice Favicon tutorial and PSP tube paintings, and a montly review of favorite sites. Unlike my reviews, these are in-depth and include commercial sites, and each deserves a visit; my review of a site led me to this "treasure". I have a feeling you can expect more art from this talented designer!

My Kentucky Sky is a very ambitious personal site. The index My Kentucky Sky page is reprogrammed every month to show information on the Planets and Moons for the current month, and moves last month to an archive! Click on planets for the month, and reach a write-up of the position of all the planets and links to photos. Click on a link and you will see several views. The photos are great! The design is very organized, and I could see an application for Frames in the future. You've got to see the comment at the bottom of the homepage, LOL. This site is "very educational" and the owner is excited about his subject.

"Very nicely done" is my reaction to Surin Family website. You will find several Image Maps, dropdown box, a nice, clean design, and a lot of family love (see especially the tributes). One place you must hit is Family Surin Family History, sporting a great pictorial genealogy tree. It is the nicest tree I have ever seen and very conducive to clicking! There are lots of promises for more features coming soon, and I hope the owners come through. I know I would really like to see more recipes and children's book reviews!

Outback Bound is the journal and photo gallery history of a family traveling by bus all over Australia. The trip has already passed Outback Bound two years and they're still going (9,500 miles according to the Logbook), and seeking work as they go! The splash page graphic is eye-catching, and while there is a Frames version, I don't see that it adds significantly to the design. Visit the Thumbnails page for good organization of different shapes of photos. See the poem "Australia" to get the flavor of people who have not tired of their country, but love it even more. This travelogue is "excellent!"

Changing Face of Earth The Changing Earth starts off with a BANG: a Javascript splash that looks like multimedia to me, and then a great Image Map interface and graphics preload Javascript. Follow the links to find professional-looking discussions and pictures of plate tectonics on the geologic history of Earth, geologic time and Canada's geology (please forgive the rocks section which is not loading). Even the credits page sports an attractive GIF that looks like a spotlight scanning words. Linked pages have a nice script navigation bar and scholarly content; the "Rocks" link works within. This site is a "design inspiration."

Long load time for Silent Hill Zone's Shockwave splash promises Silent Hill Zone to be worth the two-minute wait ... and it is! The screen is a slideshow of characters in this game, but the beauty is upon automatic redirection to the main page. The (invisible) navigation frame has an intriguing graphic -- bubbles up through the menu script. The opening survey is flattering; your opinion on design and content is solicited. On the Characters page, don't miss the menu bar at the top of the frame for pictures. While you're here, learn to play the game with complete instructions and secrets. It is "just beautiful."

· Fireflii My weakness for scripts draws me to Fireflii's medieval site. Nice Javascript navigation through our universe. I especially enjoyed the Flyover on the Dragon page; what a lot of fun, and thank heavens for the left-click. Also, the Dragon page's challenge to find the secret intrigued me (I think it is in the phrase about the big theme park). Fireflii leaves a part of herself in her poetry. The sparkling linkware graphics are arranged for easy loading and viewing; I have my eye on a couple : ) And find the flashy Star Trek tribute. This is a real "fun site!"

Curious Cottage · Curious Cottage is a "beautiful and peaceful" garden site. Background sets are chosen with great care to match content and only the best are used. Very nice flower scans appear on Recognitions with an exquisite mouseover effect. The entrance image map is original. The mouse has different trailers. Nice animated background on the Cottage page. The keyboard in Play Palace is super! I could go on, and on, and on. Go see it!

· English-Zone is written for both students and teachers. The site features hundreds of individual lessons and a Javascript quiz with each! Questions provide the English-Zone immediate feedback of both answers and scoring; this is really good material ... a tremendous amount of work. I printed ALL of the Study Tips for my son, thank you. Find a large section for teachers, too. What a feat from someone who just graduated from college and began teaching in 1992. I am "very impressed!" Oct. 2001 upgraded to commercial from http://members.home.net/englishzone/index.html.
