What I have taught

SOSE

I taught a few lessons on the water cycle and made up a couple of posters to illustrate. The labels are stuck on with blue tac when each word and step is being discussed, and then the students can practice sticking the labels on themselves. This is easily made into a competition.

Reading comprehension/SOSE

As a class we read a information sheet that I had created about trees. I wanted the students to "pick out" the uses of the trees. As each child gave an example, I stuck the corresponding leaf onto the tree. The next part of the activity was where the students created their own tree. In groups of three, each student had a different role (painter, writer, cutter), as chosen by luck from a hat. I chose the groups, as the class is multi-leveled and I wanted a more even grouping.

These are the results. The students worked well together (I also chose the groups on their compatability) and I was pleased at the intersting titles the children chose (The tree of life, how trees can help). The activity concluded with the students presenting their posters to the class. This was good practice of their oral skills. I forgot that I wanted the students to state what factor they thought was the most important, because I wanted to conclude that all factors are important.
