Grade 2

For the month of November , this is what we will learn:

The children will  read
poetry to build fluency. When poems come home, have your child read them over and over. At the end of the week, the children will read the booklets/poems to me. They DO NOT have to memorize the readings!
We will be reading stories in the Reader, as well. The children will give written answers to questions based on what they have read. They have been introduced to the
Completing Story Questions Strategy which has been pasted into the Reading copybook. This strategy requires the student to use words from the question in the answer to help them focus on what the question is asking. This is a process that takes time to develop. You can help with this process by having your child read a few pages from a library book and asking  some questions to be answered in writing using the strategy.

For the week of November 17 - 21, this is what we will learn:

Spellin
g: Unit 13 -  Double Consonants (We will do U. 12-the review unit-next week)                   Unit 13 Test on Friday, Nov. 21

Phoni
cs: So far in Unit 4 we have talked about syllables (Turtle words and Rabbit words) and the soft c and soft g sounds. See the Chart on this website. We will be reviewing consonant blends this week.

Readin
g: We will be reading The Surprise this week. The children will do a fun activity with this story. We will also be doing a Comprehension Check. This story completes Unit 1, so we will be having the Unit 1 Test very soon. The children do not really study for this test, but you can begin reviewing some of the Reading workbook pages that teach phonics skills that will be on this test: short vowel sounds, long vowels with final silent e, long e sound spelled (ea, ee, e, and y).

Grammar
: We will begin our unit on Nouns. Any papers that come home in a packet about nouns will have to be returned to be filed in the children's Grammar binders.

Continue working on your November book project.
