| Welcome to Mrs. Donohue's Second Grade Language Arts class. We will be learning so much this school year, and we'll be having lots of fun as we learn, too. *Spelling:We start every day with Spelling. Words are introduced through multisensory activities. -Homework will include workbook pages and other daily activities to be completed in the Spelling copybook. -The children will learn to put their spelling words into ABC order--daunting at first, but it will get easier. This is a very useful skill that the children will learn to connect to other activities. -Writing words 2 times each. -Using words in original sentences. -The children will be allowed to come up with their own creative ideas to practice their spelling words. *Grammar: We will be doing more work with Grammar beginning with a review of Sentences. Your child will be given a plastic folder which will hold grammar papers (there is no second-grade grammar workbook, but there are grammar pages in the Reading workbook). The folder will be kept in school and sent home periodically to study. *Phonics: We will continue with the Modern Curriculum Press Phonics Workbook. For the most part, we will work our way through the book beginning with a review of short and long vowels. We may skip around at times and work in conjunction with the Reading series. Expect phonics homework every day. *Reading: We will begin the year in the second-grade reader of the Scott Foresman reading series. The children will continue to receive papers with vocabulary words. Please cut these into flashcards and practice them as often as possible. In time, they will learn how to write answers to comprehension questions (this is a process that takes some time to learn). Comprehension will also be assessed through various informal means (we'll try to make it fun!). Check this website weekly to find out what we will be learning in class.
