2. THE BAD: Lanyu Island off the coast of Southeastern Taiwan, was once strong in culture and tradition, but is quickly recessing in its only trade (fishing). Tourism is what the Yami Tribe of Lanyu Island now strive on in order to increase the popularity of their island and increase their limited economy. The fishing boats below are used more as a tourist attraction for travellers who visit for the day in order to take photos next to these meticulously designed boats. A photo of their traditional boats are not only a souvenier, but a costly endevour as well. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3. and ..... THE UGLY: Taiwan has used the remoteness of Lanyu Island as a reason to deposit the country's toxic waste on its shores. Lanyu residents are protesting that it is a violation of their human rights, and are demanding that Taiwan remove the toxic waste. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
