This region is
steeped in the history of the Marathas, the Moguls and the British.
Many forts show the scars of battles fought long ago. It has lots of
thick forests. Morning buses from PUNE railway station
or SWARGATE to WELHE, BHOR and WAI are
some of the major starting points for treks in this area.
THE BHULESHWAR RANGE
Many important forts of the Maratha kingdom lie in
this area. RAJGAD, the first capital of Shivaji, RAIGAD
where the two coronations of Shivaji were held and PURANDAR
fort where Shivaji was defeated. RAIGAD and the area around
it falls in the Konkan while the other forts are on the Western
Ghats.
Buses are available from PUNE railway
station to different parts of this area.
THE BHOR AREA
Bhor is connected to PUNE and BOMBAY
by regular buses. It is advisable to reach BHOR by early
morning to get further connecting buses.
THE WAI AREA
WAI is situated on the PUNE-MAHABALESHWAR
road and is connected by many buses, which usually operate in
the morning. There are excellent temples of Ganpati here.
