Heart on my Sleeve

I’m a sucker for kindness.

I guess that’s not so bad.

But it modeled my behavior,

In encounters that I’ve had.

This comes not without consequence,

Although they’re not easy to see.

But my main regret here is…

The biggest casualty isn’t me…

I don’t know how to treat them,

Less than they deserve,

But eventually their hearts ache.

What purpose does that serve?

They think they see a diamond,

A diamond in the rough.

In how they’re treated, how they’re loved,

I guess that’s more than enough.

But never does it feel right,

And a lifetime is at stake…

My heart grows heavy every time,l

But it’s their hearts that I break.

Oh, but that is not the end,

I almost wish it were…

I always want to stay their friend,

Encouraging old feelings to stir.

I don’t wish that this would happen,

Though it happens anyway.

But if once someone’s that close to me,

Then close to me they’ll stay.

I’m not one for goodbyes,

I don’t forget a friend.

It would have to be their wish,

To have the friendship end.

Maybe sometimes it has to,

I really cannot say.

Just know that you stay in my prayers,

Every single day.
