mark feldman's summer trip
new mexico part 3 - july 5-7
from carlsbad, i spent one night in el paso, tx, then drove up to white sands national monument.  yet another one-of-a-kind place!  i was crazy enough to do a 4.5 mile hike in the 102 degree sun, and... i got very hot and kind of felt like a creaky C3PO on tatooine, but it was worth it.  glad i brought water though.
that night, i drove to a town called Truth Or Consequences, in which i just felt i couldn't pass up the chance to stay the night.  (a quick drive through the town made me conlude i should've just taken the consequences)  i stayed in a rather 'colorful' hostel.  the 'dorm' is pictured here to the left.
next came santa fe, which suffered a little from over-touristiness, but overall was a fun place.  my slightly more preferable accomodations are shown to the right for comparison.
on my first day in santa fe, i visited the international folk art museum, then took a stroll down canyon road, full of art galleries, focusing on the navajo.  i was particularly admiring the rugs and wishing i could afford one... i also visited the (supposedly) oldest house in the usa (left).
and the food... mmmm.... new mexican cuisine is kind of like mexican, but not quite... there's less cheese and sour cream, and more of a focus on the chile and the meat / vegetables.  not to mention the sopaipillas (fried bread).  i had to try lots of different things, just to make sure i wasn't missing anything, of course...
