canyonlands brought me my first real spectacular scenery of the southwest. i spent day 1 at the island in the sky area, taking in the canyons within canyons, doing a short hike to a syncline called upheaval dome, and generally saying "oh my god" to myself... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
i saved up my energy for day 2, on which i hiked 11 miles to chesler park (below) and the joint trail (lower left - yes, the trail actually goes between the rocks!) in the needles area. with the vast network of trails, and variety of unique formations, this is a great destination for serious hikers. as you can see, i managed a slight smile in spite of the 95 degree weather... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
