| These early 1950's covers for 10 inch Blue Note albums set the tone for the future. Reid Miles had not yet become the dominant artistic force he would soon be at Blue Note. Other artists were creating covers with striking colors and lettering which caught the eye and were distinctively "Blue Note". |

| Album covers have been an essential part of the packaging of jazz since the 1940's. 78 RPM Albums (where three or more records were sold together with cardboard covers like a photo album) were usually a repackaging of older material for collectors. These albums often used vibrant colors and designs to attract the eye. By the early 1950's, new jazz recordings were being sold as 10" 33RPM Long Playing records, most companies switching to the 12" 33RPM by 1955. Photographs and artwork began to become a part of the "image" of the music. A Riverside, Pacific, Clef or Blue Note album was identifiable by its cover, and you knew what kind of music you would hear by the cover design. The cool line drawings of David Stone Martin, on Clef or Verve LP's, or Reid Miles use of photos and graphics for Blue Note (and a few other labels), were as important as the music to the jazz listening experience. |
