Charlie Lourie and Michael Cuscuna's dream project, Mosaic produces limited edition high quality Jazz box sets licensed from various labels and frequently featuring lesser known figures. These aren't usually available in stores, so this is the best place to view and purchase these sets. The website is very attractive and provides complete information on all available boxes, including a picture of the box and discography. |
| DISCOGRAPHIES All Music Guide From the AMG book people, this very useful site allows searching for artists, albums or songs for biographical or discographical information. Not just jazz, but their jazz reviews by Scott Yannow are often helpful for beginners. Beware of numerous typos, factual errors and missing information. Still a great place to visit. Michael Fitzgerald Homepage Jazz researcher and writer Fitzgerald keeps this site as an ongoing catalogue of his research. Including some interesting links as well as his own discographical work. He calls the site "a repository for many great things musical and extra-musical". That's a good description. Check this one out. Art Blakey Discography Excellent list of released sessions and personnel covering Blakey's career as a leader, 1950 to 1990. Includes album cover photos. Easy to navigate and comprehensive. Lee Morgan Discography Well designed discography of sessions by trumpeter Lee Morgan, including cover photos. Good place for Lee Morgan fans. Thelonious Monk An all inclusive site for Monk information. Includes a very detailed discography. A labor of love from a Monk fan. Solo Flight This site is devoted to electric jazz guitar pioneer Charlie Christian. Leo Valdes did a great job with this site which presents rare photos discographical information, and musical transcriptions of classic solos. Christian had a tragicallly short career, but produced an amazing amount of music, all of which deserves attention. An essential site for any fans of jazz guitar. Jack Teagarden A nice tribute site to trombone great Teagarden, featuring a biography, discography, filmography, and other material on Big T. Both Sides Now Album Discographies Massive collection of lists of albums from hundreds of labels listed alphabetically. Titles, artists, dates, and track listings. Seems to be more of a Blues/Rock and Roll focus, but useful information can be found here. Bix Beiderbecke Bixography Excellent resource for Bix fans and fanatics. Constantly updated with new information, this site includes excellent discographical info, photos, access to Bix radio tributes, text and links, plus an interesting message board. Louis Armstrong Discography An up to date, professionally presented, comprehensive discography of Pops' many recording sessions. Listing personnel, dates and details along with great photos, graphics and a sidebar with pictures of the CD's where you can find the music listed. This is an essential stop for the Armstrong fan. | GOOD JAZZ WEBSITES Jazzmatazz Upcoming CD's Alan Lankin's excellent site is constantly updated with lists of upcoming and recently released jazz albums from all labels. This site also includes coupons for online music stores. Red Hot Jazz The best place to find detailed information, including photos and discographies, on jazz artists before 1930. A lot of research obviously went into this site. WKCR FM Listen online to WKCR, Columbia University radio. Not jazz all the time, but a lot of excellent jazz programming featuring birthday tributes to many jazz artists and regular programs hosted by jazz researcher Phil Schaap. The Doodlin' Lounge NPR host Pete Fallico's site devoted to jazz organists. Cool pictures and information on organ greats like Big John Patton, Jimmy Smith, Baby Face Willette, and Larry Young. The best place for bio and discog information on these legends. Big Band Database Plus This site contains a huge amount of text with information on hundreds of American and English Swing bands and bandleaders, dance bands, and some information on Dixieland bands. Hard Bop Homepage Eric Olsen's site devoted to the musicians who played Hard Bop, includes photos, bio and discog information. Homemade Jazz Page Chris Hovan's site is full of great information on jazz, including cd reviews, artist and label spotlights, helpful links, and an upcoming reissues list. Chris is a contributing writer to allaboutjazz.com, Jazz Review, and the Jazz and Blues Report, and he links to these sites so you can read more of his insightful reviews and interviews. Chris' site has nice graphics as well. Check this one out. Great Day in Harlem This attractive site is devoted to the famous Art Kane jazz photo (see below!) which included most of the jazz greats active in New York in 1958. It allows you to click on parts of the photo to view it close up and see information on the many jazz greats featured in each part. Very well done site, recently revamped to include an excellent message board and other features. John RT Davies This site is owned and operated by legendary remasterer Davies who continually works magic on ancient recordings, revealing sounds not heard since they were new. This site lists some of the many CDs where you can hear his work, as well as info on how Davies works and his other projects (including his own band). |
