The Second Spectacular Babylon 5 Movie Thirdspace |
Which was the first spectacular Babylon 5 Movie? Was it In The Beginning? Was it sensational and spectacular? This TV movie is set during the series' fourth season. Between the sixth and seventh episodes; so the Shadows and Vorlons have just been dispensed with, and Sheridan's campaign against President Clarke is about to begin in earnest. On the way back from dealing with some Raiders who were threatening B5's supply routes, Ivanova and her squadron of Star Furies happen upon a huge alien artefact floating about in hyperspace. It gets towed back to babylon 5 so that they can examine it. On the station beautiful telepath Lyta Alexander begins to sense strange things about the Artefact. she was altered by the Vorlons to make her even more powerful during the time she spent in their Empire. A party from Interplanetary Expeditions (IPX) arrives to analyse the structure, on the condition that Earth can't have it if it's a weapon. They discover that it has Vorlon writing all over it, and very quickly come to the conclusion, based upon very little evidence, that it is a gateway to Thirdspace. This would allow people to travel even more quickly than is possible in Hyperspace, in fact they would reach their destination almost instantaneously. God knows how they become convinced of this so quickly, but they completely wrong. Meanwhile, all over the station people start having dreams about a strange city, including Ivanova and Vir. Before long riots break out and the place gets trashed as the Artefact begins exerting it's influence. No-one knows what to do until Sheridan has the idea of talking to Lyta, as she knows a thing or two about Vorlons. A Vorlon message is played back through her, as she explains that the Vorlons used to think they were Gods, and tried to get to Heaven by building the gateway. On the other side, though, powerful evil creatures, who were "anti-life" tried to kill them. She tells Sheridan what to do. Outside the creatures have begun breaking through. they're ships are cool, they are like anti-Vorlons, with similar ships, but they are a mixture of organic and metal ships. There's an amazing battle, with the White Stars fighting them, and Sheridan in a space suit flying through it all. This is much better than In The Beginning, as it works much better as a story. In some ways though, it's like a microcosm of the whole series, with impressive build-up, which just doesn't quite deliver because it is wrapped up quite simply and quickly. On the whole, though, better than most non arc-related stories, and it does echo the Vorlons mighty presence in the series. |
