Free Heat & AC forever!  Can you get a better energy price than that?
The heat coming out of the top vent is HOT!!! It typically hits 132 degrees on a 0 degree winter day in Michigan.  With the top vent in wide open mode it will reach 120 degrees but doubles air flow for even more heat.  It works in Michigan, so it will work just about anywhere you live.

Just a few extra conservation tips:

*  If your windows are sliders and have the screens on the exterior, remove them in the winter and place them on the inside of the window between the window and blinds, they absorb the sun and heat up.

*  Do your window washing in the late summer to increase clarity, and also any touch up caulk here.

*  When designing a house, pay attention to the south sun facing side and add more windows on this wall.  Limit windows to minimum on other walls.  Also a good idea is to always use at least 2x6 studs for exterior walls to allow more insulation, regardless of the minimum requirement of 2x4.

*  Let the sun shine in during the day, use thermally protecting window treatments to cover up at night.  Do the opposite in the summer.

*  Learn how to use a digital thermostat properly.

*  If you have a basement, consider finishing it for summer use.  Basically use your basement for free AC in the summer.  When you finish it, do not insulate it, regardless what people tell you.  You need the thermal mass of the concrete walls, so if you cover them, use something with high thermal mass that will transfer the temperature easily.  The same applies to the concrete floor, use something that will maintain the thermal mass like ceramic tiles.  You should at least finish a bedroom, living room, & bathroom in the basement designed for summer use.  Doing this can totally eliminate cooling bills.

*  AC units and furnace fans you should minimize because they use a ton of energy.

*  Portable fans or ceiling fans on the other hand use little to no noticeable energy, do not be afraid to use these, even 24/7 if necessary.
