12/4 - Collegiate Fascism at Delaware: For years, I was told stories of the University of Delaware being a party school and I believed everything I was told. Instead, Delaware is the home of outrageous policies, unfair judicial process, frat kids who would rather look pretty than throw a good party, "college bars" that scan IDs and overall alcohol dictatorship. Never before have I seen a University so bent on preventing students from even seeing any form of booze. A place that was home to one of the great college Rock and Roll bars that will close in two weeks to make room for retirement condos. A place where a "zero tolerance" policy is now in effect. Im pretty sure that any policy involving zero tolerance is a violation of the first ammendment of the Constitution. At the same time as this, an increase in frequency of and severity of noise violations on Delaware students' homes is mandated by our friends in blue. There is no reason for handing out a noise violation to any house in the student districts before well into the morning. Anyone stupid enough to try to live in these areas with their families should be the ones penalized by the law. They should sell their house to a real estate company and move outside of Newark. But they dont realize that this would make them profit and also alleviate the pressure of living next to college students. But what exactly is the real reason that noise violations are being distributed like STDs at a Disco? Its not because people complain about noise, its because the University of Delaware and Newark Police have teamed up to increase business at the weak main street bars. What easier way to boost incoming money from bar patrons then to force everyone out of their homes and into the line full of yuppies and New Jersey trash at Kates or locals and New York trash at Shaggy's. Just look at the Balloon: after more than 30 years of drawing big name acts and great rock shows to the shit-hole that is the state of Delaware, it is being thanked by the city that once embraced it by being turned into a place for old people to die. In doing so, Newark will change its image once and for all from any type of college bar town to a place where it is better to settle down after retirement and try to mingle with a younger age group. A place where instead of having a 1000 kids drunk off $1 Nattie Lights sweating and jumping to a great local rock band, you have kids waiting in line to pay $5 for a Corona and to hear a DJ push play on the latest "hit" by Chris Brown. Anyone coming from a respectable college to check out the Newark bar scene would probably laugh and then leave immediately. But what can we do? Wait quietly in our place of residence for UD Police to barge though the door in riot gear with the attrocious thought of college students consuming alcohol? Walk peacefully down the street in hopes that the Newark Police turned KGB wont find a reason to charge us with a misdemeanor in the name of zero tolerance? Wait in line at a shitty bar with visions of getting a few beers that you couldnt enjoy in the comfort of your own place because you are too worried about getting a nosie violation or disorderly dwelling (aka a fascist cop sees more than four people enter or exit a house at once)? Fuck this school and their ridiculus laws and policies. Fuck this town and its managers that want to prevent it from being a college town. Fuck the families too stupid to move off campus. Fuck every hardass cop who thinks they are making a difference by arresting a drunk student or breaking up a party while a cracked out townie rapes a student and sets the place on fire. Its time to reevaluate the goals and motives of this place. |
