Fitting a Raptor in a Funkey 46 Long Ranger
Here are some pics of my project. I'll narrate as I go when needed. Check back for more pics soon....

I modified the Raptor with an OS .50 and long boom to fit this project. The boom and belt were purchased from HeliProz. With all the power the .50 produces, it should haul this fuse around nicely....
Here's what you get when you order the fuse. The body, windshield, and tail feathers. Instructions are minimal, and only describe how to mount the fins and attach the two fuselage halves. No mention of mechanics mounting in the instructions at all....

The glasswork quality is very good. The kit does not include any wood, so you must design and build your own platform to mount the mechanics. I determined a 3/4" platform would provide the correct height for the boom to fit centered in the tail, and get the mechanics as high as possible without having the collective arm bump the top of the fuse at full negative pitch deflection....

Even with the mechanics mounted to a 3/4" platform, there is enough clearance for the collective arm when it is full-up at -9 degrees pitch so it does not hit the top of the fuselage. Boom length is adequate, but would be better if it was another 3/4" long. Some time in the future I may research boom lengths and see if I can locate one a bit longer than the one I got from HeliProz. Now, the tail rotor shaft is forward of the centerline of the vertical fin. For appearance, it would look better in line with the fin and tailcone seam. |

Wood Platform Construction: The wood platform dimensions are 3/4" high by 12" long and 4" wide. The landing gear mount blocks are spaced 9" on center apart to provide a scale distance between struts, and the aft mount is located 1" forward of the rear edge of the side rail. The frame mounts are 7-1/4" on center apart, and the aft mount is located 1-1/2" forward of the rear edge of the side rail. I glued a 1/16" piece of plywood to the aft frame mount to raise the aft end of the frames and tilt the mechanics slightly forward. This provided the proper boom alignment, as you can see in the pic it is perfectly centered in the fuse. The wood platform is attached to the fuse using Household Goop, which is available at most hardware stores. I got mine at HomeBase. This stuff works great, and absorbs a bit of the vibration as it remains somewhat flexible when dry. I was really happy with the way it secured the wood down. Thanks to Jerry and Joe at the scale forum for the tip! The fuse is attached to the mounts using the stock Raptor landing gear screws, screwed in from underneath the fuse. Small holes in the fuse allow the screws and screwdriver to be inserted. |
