Vario Petrol Jet Ranger #1004 |
I purchased this Vario Jet Ranger in December, 2000. I'm going to put Vario gasser mechanics in it. This fuselage is huge! As you can see in the pics, it dwarfs the Funkey 46 Long Ranger fuse I'm working on also.... |

Feb. 23, 2001 I originally intended to use Xcell mechanics in the Vario fuse. After thinking it over, I've decided to use the Vario Benzin mechanics that are supposed to be used in this fuselage. Why? I guess I felt that if I wanted to do this project right, I should be using the correct mechanics, plus I like the idea of a gasser scale. No smoke, nice slow head speed, and no high-pitched whine of a glow engine. I'm buying a set of Benzin mechanics from a guy on-line, so hopefully the deal will go smoothly. I'll post pics when the mechanics arrive.... |
Mar. 8, 2001 Here are some pics of the Vario Benzin mechanics I bought. They are new, but purchased on-line from a guy who had partially assembled them. You can also see the 800mm Vario CF blades that came in the deal also. These are specifically designed for the petrol mechanics. |
Mar. 8, 2001 I started assembling and installing the woodwork. So far, everything fits perfectly! This is definitely a quality kit. You get what you pay for! |
April 04, 2001 After taking a break to build 4! Zagi's, I'm back to working on the heli. As you can see, construction is coming along nicely. I love this kit! All the wood fits great, and only requires minimal sanding to fit exactly! With a few helpful tips from Joe (thanks!), I installed the tail boom and the tail torque tube bearing assembly, as well as the tail fin mount and tail rotor gearbox mount. The landing gear is bolted in place, and will require a bit of tweaking to get the angles scale like. I'm modifying the way the horizontal tail fins are mounted. The plans have you screwing a big pan head screw into the end of the fin to secure it to the aluminum tube. No way! Ugly screws, NOT! I'm gonna glue mine in place permanently, and have made an inner rib of balsa to mount the fin to. The outer rib is the stock ply rib that normally would be on the inner end. |
The fin will slide over the ribs and be glued in place with GOOP. The rest of the pics are random pics of the construction. The two at the top of this segment are size comparisons to the Funkey 46 Long Ranger. The Vario JR is huge! It's almost 6 feet long! It makes it easier to work on as I can almost stick my whole head inside the fuse, and I've got a huge bucket head!! Sorry, no pics of my head allowed! I've got to install the fins, cut out a few more openings in the upper hatches and door windows, attach the doors, and then I think it's ready to begin the painting process! More to follow.... |
