Hidden Secret

She opened up the envelope and discovered an invitation to her parents wedding anniversary on Saturday. She stared at the invitation in doubt. She didn't get along well with her mother and didn't feel like going because of their bad relationship. She was always trying to get involved in her life and criticized her all the time.Once she had moved out to start a new life on her own, she was hoping for it all to end but instead it got worse. Now everytime she conversed with her mother on the phone, she would always ask about her love life. This irritated her so much that the last time she spoke with her, she decided to just lie and pretend that there was someone. Becky decided to call up her mother to decline her invitation, but as she dialed she felt bad about being absent on the day that was very important to both of her parents, even though she didn't get along with one. She was about to hang up when her mother's voice answered.

"Hello"
"Hi, Mom it's Becky" "Becky how are you?"
"I'm fine and you?"
" Very well. Did you receive the invitation?"
"Yes, i did and i wanted to say that i'm looking foward to seeing you and dad" "I am too, dear. Are you bringing your boyfriend?"
"No, i'm not"
"Why not? we would be happy to meet him"
"No it's ok maybe some other time" Becky said covering her lie."
"Nonsense, you've talked about him before and i think it's time that your father and I met him."
" But-" "No buts, we never see each other and this an opportunity which you can present to us this special man you've been seeing"
"Yeah, oh yeah he's a very special man" Becky laughed nervously.
" And we have a spare room in the beach house,so the two of you can stay for the weekend"
"Mom, i don't know if he can stay for the weekend-"
"If he has work tell him to take off, it's just for a short while" her mother interrupted.
"Fine... then I'll see you Saturday" Becky said and hung up the phone.
"Damn, am I in trouble" she said to herself. After finishing her work she went to bed but didn't sleep. She was thinking up of a way to find a boyfriend before the ceremony. The next morning she met Nikki at Starbucks who was had a big smile on her face and was filled with glee.
"Hi!" she greeted her.
"Hi" Becky mumbled.
"Someone seems to be in a grumpy mood today" "I don't wanna talk about it"
"I ordered your coffee already,maybe all you need is your caffeine fix" Nikki said handing her her coffee.
"I need more than my caffeine fix to get me out of my problem. Anyway, how did the reunion go last night?"
" Perfect! our parents were happy and they got along just dandy"
"Just dandy? geez, since when do you say 'dandy'? "
"Don't rain on my parade. What's up with you?"
Becky let out a deep sigh and told her story.
"My day went like this: my boss gave me a raise yesterday"
"Yeah, I'd be upset too if i got a raise at work" Nikki commented sarcastically.
" Then I went out to eat dinner with Mark, and when i got home i was going through my mail and i found an invitation to my parents wedding anniversary"Becky said ignoring her.
"So... the problem is?"
"The problem is that you know how i feel about my mom"
"Oh yeah, the she-devil"
"Yup, and when i called her she told me to bring a long my boyfriend to stay with them for the weekend"
"But you don't have a boyfriend"
"I know, that's why i'm in deep shit because i lied to her before and i told her that i did have one, and now she wants to meet him"
"OoOo that is a problem"
"Where am i gonna find a boyfriend by Saturday?"
"How much did you tell her about this 'boyfriend' of yours?"
" I just said he's a guy i met through a mutual friend"
"So why don't you take one of your co-workers?"
" One of them? those guys are almost old enough to be my father"
" uh... how about Mark?" Nikki suggested
"I don't know...maybe I should just call her up and tell her i won't be able to make it" Becky said taking out her cell phone.
" No, take Mark. He's a good looking smart guy, and I'm sure your parents will like him" Nikki said taking Becky's cell phone.
"But Mark's my friend"
"Exactly, so it won't be so awkward"
"It will in this situation"
"It's just for the weekend. Besides you two already know each other well, and at least you'll have stuff to talk about"
"I guess i could ask him. But what if he won't do it? "
"Then I could ask Danny to do it, and i know you wouldn't dare take him away from me" Nikki grinned.
Becky laughed remembering Mark's joke about Danny"No I'd never think of doing that. Thanks, but I'll try and manage"

By the end of the day she planned on calling Mark to inform him on her problem and hoping that he'd help her out of it.
