The first person to greet them was her father who seemed to be very happy to see her.
"Hija ya llegaste!"{translation: Daughter, you've arrived} he exclaimed in spanish.
"Act natural" Becky whispered to Mark as her father approached them. Her parents were from Colombia and raised their children to be proud of their heritage and to learn the language. Her mother spoke it, but when they had conversations together they mostly spoke in English. Her father, even though he had an accent spoke English very well, but preferred speaking to Becky in Spanish.
"Papi, this is Mark" she said hugging her dad and introducing him to Mark.
"It's nice to meet you" Mark politely smiled shaking his hand.
"Likewise, come in my wife is dying to meet you, but first i want you to meet a couple of relatives that have arrived"
They followed him towards the beach house and led them into the living room where they found a couple of her aunts having a conversation.
As soon as they saw Becky they squealed with joy and started speaking together at once in about how happy they were to see her.
All she could do was laugh at the chaos while her father calmed them down and they introudced themselves properly.
" Now where's your mother?" her dad thought out loud.
"She's taking a shower" her aunt Jennifer replied.
"Oh. You can meet her later, first let me show you to your room"
They once again followed him up the spiral stairs up to their room carrying their belongings. The room was bright and filled with the natural light from the sun. A light breeze blew in through the open doors with it's light colored curtain flailing in the air. It was a big room that had a high ceiling and shiny wooden floors. The furniture was white and matched the doors. There was a table that had an alarm clock radio, a small stereo and a phone.
"I'll let you settle down" he said and left.
"Wow, this place is huge. I can't even imagine how big your parents room must look like" Mark commented as he walked towards the small balcony outside the room that overlooked the ocean.
"Yeah, my parents bought it when they retired and basically spend the summer here"
" I'd live here year round"
Becky grinned slightly while putting away her clothes in the one of the empty dressers in the room."Sorry about my crazy family"
"nah, they're not crazy. They're just excited about seeing you"
" Ok, but i gotta warn you it only gets worse. I have other relatives that are coming who are much worse than my two aunts downstairs"
"you mean the cheek pinchers?" Mark smiled mischievously as he layed on the bed.
" Yup, and i hate that! i remember as a kid i would always beg my parents not to invite my aunt laura and Denise because they would pinch the hell out of me. I swear i had red cheeks for a week"
He laughed. " I wish my family had been that way"
"What cheek pinchers?"
"No...just close like yours"
"Your family wasn't close?" she asked sitting down next to him.
"Nope, after my parents divorced both sides were always feuding with one another"
"That sucks"
"Yeah it really did. It felt like it was my fault and I was always in the middle of it"
" Is it still the same now?"
" yeah, only it's worse now because they want nothing to do at all with each other. I guess it's better than them fighting about stupid shit all the time"
There was a knock on the door and Becky answered it. It was her mother dressed up as usual with her hair all in place with a smile on her face. "
Becky I'm so glad to see you" her mother said hugging her."You too mom. This is Mark" she pointed out to him.
"It's finally nice to meet you Mark" she said shaking his hand.
"How was the ride here?"
"it was pretty long, but we managed"
"Good, well the guests will arrive soon and Mark my husband has agreed to take you shopping where you'll be able to pick out a proper attire for this evening, while I go with Becky shopping for hers"
"Shopping?" Becky asked.
"Yes, you can't just wear any outfit tonight,Becky. We've rented this hall in the hotel nearby and you need to dress appropriately for the event"
"Why'd you just tell us this now?" she said annoyed.
" Everytime i called, you either weren't home or the phone was busy"
"Why didn't you call me on my cell?"
" You know how i feel about cell phones. Besides when you talk to me on it the line always gets cut"
"Great, and now you wait until the last minute, that is so typical of you. And what about the other guests?"she said angrily.
" I was able to contact the rest of them on time and Don't take that tone with me young lady. Now lets go your father's waiting in the car. Your aunts have agreed to stay and wait for the other guests to arrive "
They followed her to the car and once they arrived at the shopping center, Mark left with her father which left her with her alone with her mother
