"Ma, I'm not going to a prom" Becky said when they entered a store that sold formal gowns.
"This store sells the best formal gowns in town, and you need to dress up for tonight. At least just once in your lifetime"
She sighed trying to suck up her moms comments and tried ignoring it.
" Listen mom i'm sorry I didn't mean to be rude back there" Becky apologized.
"I guess it's alright. look at this dress isn't it marvelous?" her mom said showing her a blue long dress with wierd designs sewed onto it.
"It doesn't really suit my style. But mom I just wanted to apologize because I don't think it's good that we get off on the wrong foot on your special day" Becky continued.
"Hmph, i can tell it doesn't suit your style. You've never dressed to impress. Why don't you dye your hair, Black is so bland and unoriginal" her mother said looking at her up and down.
"Mom! see this is exactly what i'm talking about"
"What do you mean?" she asked continuing to look at the dresses.
"You have never complimented me on my successes. You've always either put me down or told me to do better"
"Well, that's not true"
"Yes it is! When i graduated at the top of the class in college you never said I'm so proud of you like any regular mother. You said Keep it up or you'll sink down to the level of lazy bums with no life"
"The only reason why I'm tough on you is because I don't want to see you end up working at some fast food resturant when you really have the potential to be better"
"I'm not a dumbass you know. I'm living my dreams right now and don't plan on leaving them anytime soon"
"Rebecca don't speak that way"
"Fine, you know what, lets just forget about this conversation and help me look for a dress"Becky said exasperated. She knew it was impossible to actually win a fight with her mom.
"How about this one?"Becky showed another blue dress with a plunging neck line.
"It's too revealing" her mom disagreed shaking her head.
Becky rolled her eyes as her mom continued to talk.
"So... this Mark how'd you meet him?"
"I told you i met him through a friend"
" He's cute. How long you two been dating?"
"I don't know... for a while i guess"
"Do you think it's serious?"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes of course it does! What if he's the man you want to marry?"
"Marry? Mom, calm down I don't think I'm ready for marriage"
"Your sister is younger than you and she's already married and had a child. Why are you waiting so long?"
"I'm not her, and I'm not even too used to my job. Can i please get accomomated with it first?"
Her mom sighed. "I'm just saying, because before you know it, you're time will be up" Becky was going to tell her mother about Nikki's engagement, but since she started with the whole marriage thing she decided not too because she would rub it in her face too.
"I love this one" Becky said showing her a red halter like dress with a criss cross design on the back. The length was just right, not too long or too short. It wasn't a provocative dress, but was very classy and conservative looking.
"Actually, i do like this one. go try it on"
Becky found her size and went to try it on and it fit perfect. The color gave her olive skin a beautiful look and the subtle sparkles on the dress made her look like a movie star.
"What do you think?" she asked her mom when she came out of the fitting room.
"It looks good. Do you want it?"
Becky nodded and they bought the dress.
"See, if you dressed more properly you'd look beautiful" her mom started again as they walked to the car.
"Yeah yeah i know" Becky replied sarcastically.
By the time they got to the car Mark and her dad were already waiting for them and seemed to be deep in conversation.
"You ready?" her dad asked in the car.
"Yep lets go" Becky said.
They arrived home and more guests had arrived. They could tell by the increased number of cars in the driveway and the amount of noise coming out of the house. They greeted the remaining number of guests and before they knew it, they had to get ready for the big event of the night.
