AINSE Winter School

2001

I represented the University of New England at the AINSE (Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering) Winter School, which ran from June 30 to July 4, 2001. Each member university of AINSE sent one student from third year science to represent them. The students came from all over Australia, and one came from New Zealand to take part. We all had different scientific backgrounds, ranging from Physics, Engineering, and Chemistry, to Biology, Environmental Science, and Geology.

The Winter School was and opportunity for us all to socialise and to learn about the technology used at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). We had introductory lectures and experimental sesions in Neutron Beam Scattering, X-Ray Emission, Radioactive Chemistry, Lead 210 Dating, and Environmental Science. We were also given a tour of ANSTO, including the Radipharmacology section and HIFAR (the Hi-Frequency Australian Reactor).

Me at the Winter School

The Winter School was not just an academic affair. There were plenty of social activities including a trivia night, a dinner cruise on Sydney harbour and a formal dinner at ANSTO which had a guest speaker and officials from ANSTO and AINSE.

Unfortunately the Winter School came to an end and we all had to go home.
