KINTBURY
RANGERS – 1 MARLOW UNITED – 3
(After
Extra Time)
Marlow
returned to action at Kintbury, playing only their third game since boxing day.
The Blues moved into the second round of the league cup, disposing of the home
teams challenge in extra time.
A
brace from skipper Tristan Heywood and a scorching volley from Lewis Brown won
the game for Marlow after a 2nd minute goal from Kintbury’s Shaun
Thorpe had given the home team the lead.
With
the team having played so little football of late Manager Kevin Carvell fielded
a strong team for this cup tie even though the real challenges lie ahead in the
league and Reading senior Cup.
As
it was both teams found the gusty wind and heavy pitch a deterrent to good
football. As a result the first half offered little to enthuse a sparse crowd.
The
fact that there were more people in the bar than watching the football says much
about the conditions on the day.
Kintbury
snatched an early lead when Thorpe volleyed over a static Cooper in the 2nd
minute.
Ollie
Flint saved United in the 9th minute clearing from under the bar with
Cooper stranded.
United
could have equalised on 17 minutes with Heywood unable to connect from a corner
from the left when well placed.
Rob
Crawford replaced Paul Catlin after the latter damaged his knee winning a superb
tackle on 18 minutes.
The
final stages of the half were enlightened by Kintbury’s Nancarrow and Adey
engaging in a prolonged slanging match, which only ended with the intervention
of the referee.
Although
United gradually began to assert themselves on the game they never really
threatening to equalise and they trudged of one down at half time.
Half
Time 1-0
Kintbury
began the second period determined to stretch their lead Angell crossing only
for Brown to miss the ball at the far post.
After
withstanding concerted pressure United broke away and gained a corner on the
left. Kintbury cleared for a second corner from the right. Buchanan’s out
swinging kick was met powerfully by Heywood who headed the ball past Roberts in
the home goal on 50 minutes.
United
now had the upper hand and they dominated the possession with Kintbury looking
the catch them on the break.
Wiltshire
replaced Cuva and Davis came on for Buchanan as Marlow went to a 4-3-3 formation
in an effort to seal the game inside the 90 minutes.
As
it was the home team had the final two efforts of the half with Thorpe firing at
Cooper and Lucacks volleying over.
Full
time 1-1
It
didn’t take United long to take the lead in the extra thirty minutes, Heywood
notching his second goal, again from a corner which was swept in from 8 yards
with the Kintbury defence in disarray in the first minute.
Two
minutes later the game was as good as over. Mat Flint won the ball deep in his
own half and fired a long pass to an unmarked Gary Wiltshire. The ball was
played wide right to Lewis Brown who strode toward the Kintbury goal and smashed
an unstoppable shot over Roberts to give Marlow a two goal cushion.
Davis
saw a long-range effort tipped over before Lewis shot weakly at Roberts when
well placed.
Wiltshire
found himself in the ref’s book for time wasting, shortly after seeing Roberts
save at his feet as he advanced on goal.
That
apart Marlow comfortably saw out the final few minutes to move into the second
round.
