MARCH ON
Marlow
United continued there winning start to the league campaign with a hard fought
3-2 home win over a defiant Wokingham& Emmbrook on Tuesday evening.
With
their opponents desperate to improve a dismal run of one point from three games
United were pushed all the way, surviving a desperate final ten minutes when
Beeching scored for Wokingham to reduce the deficit to one goal.
United had
started the game brightly carrying the game to their opponents with
Sciaraffa’s free kick being met by Buchanan in the first minute.
A
minute later and Matt Glynn fired in a 25-yard free kick, which skimmed the
crossbar. It took until the 6th minute for the ‘Satsuma’s’ to
launch their first attack when Andy Cheale’s free kick was cleared for a
corner on the right from which Hanson fired over.
Mat
Cheale shot over from a throw on the right before Marlow’s Middleton and
Sepede combined with the latter crossing ball behind the onrushing Davis.
Wokingham
gradually began to dictate the game although they rarely threatened the home
goal.
Apart
from a dropped cross by home keeper Walden on 20 minutes which was cleared by
Flint the home defence comfortably dealt with the away teams forays.
Marlow
tended to over elaborate with many moves becoming bogged down in the midfield
enabling Wokingham to contain the play.
On
23 minutes a Glynn free kick was played into the area where Heywood just failed
to make contact. In the 24th minute Wokingham’s Payne was booked
for chopping down Sepede on the left and Glynn fired the free kick over the bar.
The
home team then found themselves a goal behind as Ben Neville ran on to a headed
through ball beating Heywood, rounding the keeper and slotting the ball into the
net from close range.
This
setback spurred on United and three minutes later Middleton’s cross from the
right was met by Davis. His shot was blocked but the Marlow forward picked up
the rebound and steered it into the net for his third goal of the season.
United
then pressed their opponents onto the defensive launching a series of attacks.
Marlow
finally took the lead when a combination of a Pedley shot, and a Middleton
cross, which was cleared, to Mat Glynn who then spectacularly fired past Harris
in the Wokingham goal from 30 yards.
Further
pressure from Marlow resulted on a corner on the right as the half entered the
last minute. Pedley crossed the ball to the near post where it was headed home
by a jubilant Heywood.
Half
time 3-1
Adam
Lanaway replaced Middleton at half time and within minutes Buchanan was subbed
by Giles after receiving a knock.
With
the substitutions the home team began to lose their shape, as the game became a
scrappy affair.
Even
so United had several chances to increase their lead with Sepede and Davis
missing excellent chances, the latter firing wide when it looked easier to
score.
Dan
Pedley became the third United player to be subbed as an injury resulted in
Wiltshire replacing the midfielder.
Wiltshire
fired wide of the far post when well placed, as Marlow seemed unable to convert
chances into goals.
Wokingham
almost scored their second when Neville fired straight at Walden when through on
goal in the 75th minute.
Just
when it appeared that Marlow had safely secured the points a Hanson free kick
was met by Breeching’s head and with Walden caught in no mans land, the ball
nestled in the net.
This
resulted in a frantic final ten minutes with Sciaraffa and Heywood being booked
as the pressure mounted with the latter being sent off for receiving his second
yellow card of the match.
It
was a relieved United who celebrated a third league win as the final whistle
went.
After
the match manager Kevin Carvell commented, “We are delighted to win a hard
fought game and remain undefeated even though tonight’s performance was
nowhere near good enough. We will need to improve dramatically for Saturdays
game at Chalfont ”
